Polarized Instrument:

Polarized instruments measure the degree to which light can be polarized. Polarization is a property of electromagnetic radiation; for example, visible sunlight or white fluorescent light contains waves that are parallel with one another but oscillate in opposite directions at right angles (90°) to each other. The polarizing filter allows only those waves to pass through it whose electric vectors vibrate in a particular plane and limits the amount of scattered light reaching an optical detector.

 

Beam Characterization:

Beam characterization is the process of measuring and analyzing light beams to determine their shape, size, and intensity. This may be done using optical instruments such as diffraction grating or a scanning monochromator. The measurement of beam characterization can be used in semiconductor manufacturing for lithography purposes, by opticians to measure laser power levels, among other uses.

The design of surgical instruments often incorporates light analysis because it provides additional information about tissue properties that cannot be seen using traditional methods such as palpation or ultrasound examination.
