The Global Electronic Nose Market size is expected to witness a CAGR of 11.2% during the forecast period from 2021-2028. North America dominates the global e-nose market with over 35% share followed by Europe (22%). The Asia Pacific will grow at the highest rate among all regions and is expected to surpass North American region by 2028.
An Electronic Nose is an artificial device that reacts to odors in the air by producing signals, typically electrical waves or vibrations. The resulting pattern of waves and their intensity is interpreted as a reaction to a particular odorant. This technology has many applications such as food safety inspections (e.g., spoilage detection), medical diagnosis (including early-stage cancer detection), environment monitoring, homeland security, and defense applications, law enforcement investigations for detecting illicit drugs and explosives, etc.
On the basis is Type, the market is segmented into QMB/SAW, Conducting Polymers, Metal-Oxide Sensors, and Others.
QMB/SAW is a type of electronic nose that uses quartz microbalances and surface acoustic waves for sensing. They are considered to be state-of-the-art sensors with high sensitivity, a wide dynamic range, fast response time, and low cost. QMBs (Quantitative Multiresponse) sensors use a quartz crystal microbalance as the sensing element. They measure changes in surface mass density due to the adsorption of volatile molecules on the sensor surface by using piezoresistive effect probe arrays for detection purposes. SAWs (Surface Acoustic Wave) based electronic noses basically have two types of sensors which are transmission mode and reflection mode. Transmission SAW is typically used for detection whereas the Reflection SAW sensor is designed to measure concentration levels.
A Conducting Polymer-based Electronic Nose uses polymers as sensing elements in its design, which can be either gas or liquid sensitive depending on the environment it operates within. The polymer film adheres to a piezoelectric crystal and changes conductivity when volatile molecules adsorb into the material interface layer. Metal Oxide Sensors use metal oxide materials such as WSiO x (tungsten disilicate) or WTeO x (tungsten telluride). They work by measuring surface acoustic waves that have been generated between the sensing unit and an object.
Metal-oxide sensors are semiconductor gas sensing devices that work by detecting the voltage (or current) change on its surface when it comes into contact with a specific gas. Metal oxide sensors have two types: Thickness mode (used for gas detection) and Resistance Mode (used to measure liquid concentrations). A thin-film metal-oxide sensor is a type of Metal Oxide Sensor that can achieve high sensitivity at low cost when used in a thin form factor, which makes it suitable as standalone electronic nose technology.
Others include devices such as silicon-based nanostructures or quantum dot‐based sensors, polymers with conductive additives, etc., which are also emerging technologies in this space.
On the basis of Application, the market is segmented into Marketing, Food, and Beverage, Entertainment, Education Healthcare Communication Military & Defense. The use of the Electronic nose in the Communication segment is also expected to grow at a steady rate, mainly due to the increasing need for detecting gas and odor molecules that are present in low concentrations such as VOCs (volatile organic compounds).
On the basis of Region, the market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, and the Asia Pacific. North America dominates the global market with significant growth opportunities emerging from other regions including Latin America and the Asia Pacific over the forecast period.
Asia-Pacific emerged as one of the fastest-growing markets owing to its large population base coupled with expanding manufacturing activities across different industries. China had been dominating this region but India's economic development has increased interest among stakeholders there, leading them to increase investments into R&D initiatives related to electronic noses. Europe was the second-largest market for electronic noses in the world, owing to higher demand from manufacturing industries.
