An air-termination lightning protection system is also known as conventional lightning protection. It mainly comprises air terminals, down conductors, and earth electrodes. Conventional Lightning Protection Systems are installed for the purpose of providing a safe path for the electrical energy from cloud to the ground by means of low resistance paths which will ensure that all or most of this energy can be dissipated safely into the ground.



Meshed Conductors Lightning Protection System:

The second most common type is a meshed conductor lightning protection system, which consists of a series of wires that are attached to the roof of the building. When a lightning strike occurs, electricity travels down these wires and then spreads out across all other objects in range (including people) before being safely conducted into the ground. This type of system offers improved performance in areas with high electromagnetic interference (EMI) levels.



Catenary Wire Lightning Conductor:

A catenary wire lightning conductor is a type of lightning rod that consists of a single, continuous wire. The wire hangs between two poles or towers and is designed to attract and then safely conduct lightning away from the building or structure. Catenary wires are often used in rural areas where there are no other nearby objects to attach a traditional lightning rod to. The exposed metal wire acts as a path for lightning strikes to travel down into the ground, instead of discharging into nearby structures.

The catenary wire is attached at one end to an anchor point on the structure and suspended with tension from poles or towers that are placed at equal distances apart along its length. If there are no other nearby objects to attach a traditional lightning rod to, then a catenary wire can be used as an alternative. Catenary wires are also known as ‘hanging wires’ or ‘drooping wires’.



Streamer Emission Lightning Conductor:

A streamer emission lightning conductor is a type of lightning rod that uses a pointed metal wire or rod to create an ionized path for the lightning strike to follow. When a storm approaches, the streamer emission conductor begins to emit small sparks (or ‘streamers’) from its tip. These streamers will eventually connect with the leaders from the thundercloud, allowing the lightning to flow down the conductor and safely into the ground. Streamer emission lightning conductors are often used in areas where there is a high risk of lightning strikes, such as near airports or tall buildings.
