In Digital Potentiometers quantized values are stored in memory registers; this technology uses lack of stability or precision over long periods which can affect accuracy at high frequencies.

Digital Potentiometers are used in digital circuits, such as LCDs. In a typical application of an Analog-to-digital converter with a Digital Potentiometer, the voltage at the input is converted to a number that represents the position on an analog scale by counting pulses from zero up to and including Vref/Vmax (or vice versa) both of which correspond to either 0 or 255 for each level respectively. The DIP package is usually fixed resistor values so it has no moving parts like switches - this reduces cost and power consumption but limits functionality significantly compared with other technologies where 1000's more variable resistors can be controlled simultaneously by software via switching transistors.

The volatile digital potentiometer is used for applications where the output needs to maintain accuracy over long periods of use and need frequent recalibration. Volatile digital potentiometers have an error that increases with time as it relies on ICs to store its settings. This makes them unsuitable for applications where the output needs to maintain accuracy over long periods of use and they need frequent recalibration.
