Microtomes:

A microtome (or micromicrotome) is a device that usually consists of one or two hardened steel knife edges fixed to an armature, which are then sharpened. The desired thickness of the frozen tissue section can be determined by adjusting the distance between the arms. Once properly adjusted, these blades will produce slices approximately 0.05mm thick from hard tissues such as bone and wood without going through them because they cut parallel to their surface; while soft materials such as plant material may require slicing at much thinner intervals due to their higher flexibility.

Harder materials such as bone and wood may require thicker cuts due to their higher resistance to slicing; while softer materials like plants may produce thinner slices than animals because they have less structural rigidity. The size can be adjusted by changing the distance between two arms on which blades are fixed-once properly set up, these blades will cut parallel to the surface without going through it. Microtomes have been used since 1875 in histology for cutting very thin sections of animal or plant tissues for microscopic examination.

Microtomes come in many shapes and sizes:

-Some require a manual push, whereas others have automated blades that can cut at different speeds

-The blade size ranges from finely ground razor blades to thick steel rods with teeth on the end like a giant comb. The width of cuts also varies depending on what type you use (microscope slides need thicker sections)

 

Cryostats:

The cryostat is a small, insulated container with a hollow metal rod through the middle of it. The liquid inside the container freezes due to contact with this cold rod and no further heat is transferred from any other part of the instrument. It's possible for impurities or air bubbles to get trapped near the cold end before freezing occurs, so some types have an automatic valve at one end which will close shut as soon as all parts start getting colder than -120°C (slightly warmer than absolute zero). These devices can be made out of metal or plastic. They work on refrigeration because ice is less dense than liquid water and so will float at a higher level when put into a container with regular water - this reduces its ability to absorb heat from the surrounding environment.

A typical cryostat will have one large pot containing the regular potable water surrounded by smaller pots filled with either crushed dry ice (solid CO) or chunks of frozen carbon dioxide (liquid CO). The lower density gas rises to the top of the pot and is cooled by contact with ice so that it sinks back down into the solution. This creates a continual cooling cycle for the liquid water in order to maintain its temperature below freezing. Some cryostats have circulators that move all parts of this liquid inside their tanks to ensure even distribution of heat throughout the solution - others will rely on gravity instead.

 

Automated Stainers:

Automated Stainers can be defined as a device for staining biological tissues, cells, and other organic materials. This process is done with the help of automated equipment that generates multiple stains without any human intervention needed to maintain them.

Automated Stainers can be classified into five types: Automated Stainers-Tissue Processor, Automated Stainers-Cell Sorter, Automated Stainer With Programmable Computer Control System, Automatic Stainer Without Programmable Computer Control System And Other Types (e.g., Permanence Testing Machines).
