The instrument can be configured to use gaseous samples or, in the case of component analysis, metal powders. In either mode, it operates by emitting photons from the light source which are absorbed by electrons within excited atoms (in gas) or molecules/particles (powder). Some of these excitation processes release radiation that may cause effects such as fluorescence or atomic emission. A second photon-detection system records this signal so that if there were any fluorescent emissions then they could also register on film during the developing process for interpretation.
