Desanders are typically cylindrical in shape and have a number of screens or baffles fitted along the length of their bodies. A desilter is a device used to remove soluble or suspended solids in water. It removes particles such as sand and silt, which can damage pumps and valves when they're circulated through the equipment. The term may also refer to removing dissolved salts from water by lowering the freezing point of the solution; this process is called "desalination." The features of a desilter are its ability to remove sand and silt particles from the drilling fluid. It is usually a centrifugal separator that uses gravity to sediment the larger particles out of the liquid. The designer must be able to handle high flow rates and have a low-pressure drop across it in order to maintain the flow rate as much as possible.
