Low Viscosity:

Low Viscosity orthopedic surgery bone cements are those which have low viscosity and they flow easily. They are used in small surgeries or for fixing the bones with less load. Low viscosity bone cement is also known as liquid bone cement. It is a two-part system that comes in an ampoule and syringe. The components react when mixed, resulting in a polymerization reaction that forms a tough solid mass around the implant site.



Medium Viscosity:

Medium viscosity orthopedic surgery bone cements have a medium level of stiffness. They are suitable for the fixation and support of implants, bones, ligaments, and tendons in various orthopedic procedures such as joint replacement surgeries. Medium Viscosity orthopedic bone cement is a viscous polymer mix of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), β-tricalcium phosphate, and other additives. It offers more mechanical strength than Low viscosity, but it requires a longer setting time as well as curing time that can be an important drawback for many surgeries. It is a good choice for cementing large bone fragments and can be used in vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty, and hip arthroplasty.



High Viscosity:

The term “High Viscosity” refers to cement with high viscosity that will typically trap the particles more firmly. Hence, it is highly viscous and less flowable than standard bone cements having low or medium viscosities. High viscosity orthopedic surgery bone cements are also known as tissue adhesives or sealants. These products can be used to repair and regenerate tissues in the surgical site for improved patient outcomes. They enable surgeons to close the skin layer around an implant, preventing any contaminants from entering into it.
