The Global Electroconvulsive Therapy Devices Market size is projected to reach USD 1.94 billion by 2028, at a CAGR of 7%. It is driven by factors such as high prevalence of mental disorders, increasing demand for alternative therapies like ECT, technological advancements and increasing awareness about benefits associated with ECT among the public. However, various side effects (memory loss) associated with ECT may hinder the market growth during the forecast period.
Electroconvulsive Therapy or ECT refers to a treatment for mental disorders that involves administering an electrical current to the brain. The devices used are called electrodes and they are placed on the head of patients undergoing this form of treatment. These devices can be unilateral, bilateral, or transcranial depending on their application in differing situations. ECT is administered when all other treatments have failed in order to treat severe depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia which do not respond well to any kind of medication including antidepressants and antipsychotics.
On the basis of Type, the market is segmented into Unilateral and Bilateral.
Unilateral Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is a common and widely used form of ECT. In this procedure, the patient's head is fitted with an electrode that delivers electric current to one side of the brain only in order to cause brief seizures. The seizure may be triggered by applying electricity through the electrodes on both sides simultaneously or just from one electrode placed on either side depending upon how high up on the forehead it is applied. This procedure usually lasts for five seconds but can go up to 20 seconds if required.
Bilateral Electroconvulsive Therapy is a procedure where two electrodes are placed on the head and electric current is passed through both sides of the brain. This produces bilateral seizures that generally last for 25 seconds or even up to one minute, depending upon various factors like age, health condition, seizure threshold, etc.
On the basis of Application, the market is segmented into Hospitals, Specialty Clinics, Mental Hospitals, and Others. The market is dominated by the hospital segment in terms of revenue followed by specialty clinics and mental hospitals segments respectively.
On the basis of Region, the market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, and the Asia Pacific. The market in the European region is expected to grow at a significantly higher rate due to the rise in awareness about ECT treatments.
