The Global Vinyl Acetate Monomer Market size was worth USD 1.1 billion in 2017 and is projected to reach USD X.X billion by 2028, growing at a CAGR of 2.2% from 2018 to 2028. The VAM industry has been witnessing significant growth during the last few years due to rising demand for its products such as adhesives, chemical intermediates, coatings, and plastics which are used in various applications such as textile manufacturing and construction activities across the world.
Vinyl Acetate Monomer (VAM) is a chemical compound that can be used in various applications such as adhesives, coatings, and food. VAM has excellent compatibility with other materials making it useful for producing high-quality plastisols and rubber products. There are two production processes involved in manufacturing vinyl acetate monomer which include the ethylene process and the acetylene process.
Vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) is an ester and it contains carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. Vinyl acetate polymerizes to polyvinyl acetate by heating with a catalyst such as sulfuric acid or sodium hydroxide in the ethylene process while acetic acid is used in the acetylene process. Ethylene-based VAMs are produced at low temperatures (60–100 °C), whereas high-temperature production of vinyl acetate-butadiene copolymers requires catalysts that can withstand higher temperatures (> 170 °C).
Vinyl acetate monomer is a useful solvent. Vinyl Acetate Monomer has low toxicity, good dispersion, and compatibility with other materials is easy to handle and is stored. VAM can be used as a co-monomer in anionic or free-radical emulsion polymerization systems due to its nonreactive nature with most functional groups of the base resin being formed from acrylic acid esters of polyhydric alcohols.
On the basis of Type, the global vinyl acetate monomer market is segmented into ethylene process, acetylene process.
As the name suggests, ethylene process VAM is produced using an organic compound called ethylene and hence it costs less than acetylene-based vinyl acetate monomer. This VAM has a low melting point of 44 °C and offers excellent adhesion to substrates such as plastics, metal foils, and paper. It is also used in paints & coatings applications due to its high solubility. Ethylene process vinyl acetate monomer (EVA) is a type of VAM, and it has several characteristics which make it widely used. Its price can be lower than that of other processes because there are no additional costs for the production such as oxygen or nitrogen gas.
The Acetylene Process method is used to produce VAM, where acetaldehyde and hydrogen chloride react with vinyl chloride in the presence of a catalyst. The reaction takes place at high temperatures (120-140°C) and low pressure (<30 bar). This process involves an equilibrium between various monomeric species composed of vinyl alcohols, ethylenes, propane, and unreacted vinyl chloride. These other products are separated from VAM using fractional distillation under a vacuum.
The acetylene process vinyl acetate monomer is prepared by the reaction of ethylene and acetic acid. This process has a high purity product with fewer amount of impurities in comparison to the ethylene route. It involves a lower capital expenditure as compared to other processes, but it needs more operating costs due to higher energy consumption for reducing chromium oxide catalyst used during the polymerization step which makes this process expensive.
On the basis of Application, the global vinyl acetate monomer market is segmented into Adhesives, Coatings, Food, Plastics, and Others.
Vinyl acetate monomer is used in the Adhesives industry. The VAM application includes the use of VAM for producing transparent adhesive tapes, pressure-sensitive adhesives, and hot melt adhesives among others. Vinyl acetate monomer is used in the adhesives industry as a solvent. Vinyl acetate monomer is a solvent for natural rubber, nitrocellulose, and polyvinyl chloride. Vinyl acetate Monomer has been used as an adhesive in adhesives such as paper or leather products, textile products, and packaging materials. Vinyl acetate monomer is also used in adhesives for paper products, leather products, and packaging materials.
Vinyl acetate monomer is used in the Coatings industry to prepare polyvinyl acetates, which are multifunctional emulsions. These coatings have applications as binders for printing ink and paint formulations, or as adhesives for corrugated boxes. Vinyl acetate monomer is used to make polyvinylidene chloride, which in turn can be made into paints. Vinyl acetate monomers are also mixed with other chemicals and resins to form clear varnishes for furniture or metal finishes on cars.
The vinyl acetate monomer is used in the Food industry as an emulsifying agent. It prevents oil separation and controls the viscosity of food products such as cream, mayonnaise, salad dressings, and canned fish. Vinyl Acetate Monomer (VAM) can be added to foods either before or after processing. Due to its low toxicity, it is also widely used as a plasticizer for cellulose derivatives which are used in pharmaceutical preparations including tablets, capsules, and other oral dosage forms along with coatings for film-coated tablets and beads, etc.
Vinyl acetate monomer is used in the Plastic industry to manufacture polyvinyl acetate which has various applications like electrical insulation, toys, and packaging. It is also known as PVAc and belongs to a family of resin modifiers that can be used for modifying other resins like PVC, ABS, SAN, etc. Vinyl Acetate Monomer (VAM) provides excellent flexibility at low temperatures along with high resistance against alkalis, acids, and solvents making it an important polymer modifier.
On the basis of Region, the global vinyl acetate monomer market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa. The North American region is estimated to dominate the global vinyl acetate monomer market from 2016 to 2021. The U.S. dominated the North American Region in terms of revenue, accounting for around 45% share of total regional demand in 2015, and is expected to maintain its dominance over the analysis period as well due to high production capacity and availability of raw materials such as propylene oxide & ethylene glycol which are major feedstock used in VAM manufacturing process via Acetylene Process route along with strong downstream markets particularly automotive industry which continues growing at a faster pace resulting into surge demand for specialty chemicals including VAM. In addition, Brazil also accounts for a significant share owing to favorable end-use industries such as paints & coatings, adhesives, and other applications. Furthermore, Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest-growing region during the forecast period and will register the highest CAGR owing to strong growth in the automotive industry along with the expansion of downstream polymer processing sectors such as coatings & adhesives.
As the demand for vinyl acetate monomers (VAM) is increasing, there are various factors driving growth in the global VAM market. Some of these include growing consumption in the adhesives industry and the chemical intermediates sector. The high level of reactivity of VAM makes it a popular choice among organic chemists as compared to other chemicals. This unique property has made this compound an essential raw material with most manufacturers using them as feedstock for producing consumer goods such as paints & coatings, plastics, textiles, etc., thus fuelling its demand worldwide.
