Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid Batteries (VRLA):

Valve-regulated lead-acid batteries (VRLA) are rechargeable deep cycle battery that uses a valve to regulate the flow of gases in and out. The VRLA has been used for over 30 years as an alternative solution for sealed or "maintenance free" applications such as solar power systems, alarm panels, security system monitoring, etc. The key benefit is no need to refill with water which reduces maintenance costs and avoids potential hazards associated with spilled electrolytes when adding fluid.

 

 

Flooded Lead-Acid Batteries:

Flooded lead-acid batteries use a container filled with sulfuric acid to generate power. The battery is composed of six cells and the electrolyte in each cell contains distilled water as its only component which creates an electric current when connected through a device, such as a car starter motor. The components of the flooded lead-acid battery include a container, plates, and separators. The electrolyte is also called “electrolyte solution” or “battery fluid”. It consists of water with sulfuric acid added to it. Battery fluid helps in generating power by carrying electric charges from one cell plate to another when it moves through narrow spaces between cells called septums where there are no electrodes present on top.

For Civilian Use:

The civilian application of submarine batteries includes autonomous underwater vehicles, seabed mapping, oil and gas exploration, and seismic surveys. Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are undersea robots that can perform various functions including gathering data about the ocean bottom while surveying currents or measuring water temperature. The AUV is connected to a surface ship by an umbilical cable through which it receives commands from the ship and transmits data.

Seabed mapping is used for a variety of purposes such as locating sunken ships, identifying potential oil or gas deposits, determining sea currents patterns, and much more. A subsea surveyor uses the submarine battery to power geophysical instruments attached from a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Oil exploration companies use seabed mapping to find likely locations for drilling while mining companies may need this information when they are evaluating different sites for excavation. The maps generated by these surveys help with other tasks such as checking undersea cables and cable routes that run through shallow water where they can be damaged by natural forces like earthquakes or storms.

 

 

For Military Use:

The application of submarine batteries for the military includes powering the weapon systems, launching torpedoes and missiles. These batteries also include a power source to provide electricity during an emergency. Its military application also includes deep-sea fiber optic cables that are laid on the seabed to transmit data between different points with a minimum risk of disruption by natural or manmade disasters.
