Global perfusion market was worth USD 87.05 millions in 2016. It is expected to grow at 8.7% CAGR during the forecast period. Over the forecast period, the increasing number of organ failures will drive up the demand for transplantation procedures.

Organ supply is the main problem with these procedures. Two preservation methods can be used to address this issue: Machine Perfusion (MP), and Static Cold Storage. Although SCS is an extremely popular preservation method, it is not efficient enough to preserve high-risk organs. Hypothermic Machine Perfusion (HMP), has been developed to address these problems.

Technology Insights

HMP accounted for a large percentage of MP technologies in 2016, due to its associated benefits. Because it allows for viability of grafts prior to transplantation, HMP is an established alternative to cold storage in kidney preservation. It is useful in kidney transplant surgery to increase patient survival rates and improve the quality of grafts. It also provides a platform to recover grafts prior to surgery.

HMP is being tested for transplantation to other organs, such as the liver. It maintains a steady flow of antioxidants, metabolic substrates, and flushes the liver of toxins, proteins, and cytokines. It reduces the reperfusion damage caused by a statically stored liver.

To curb rising demand for warm-blood perfusion, Normothermic MP techniques will be more popular in the future. Perfusion at Normal Body Temperature is available in ex-situ as well as in-situ regional perfusion.

Reperfusion lesions can occur after liver transplantation from a diseased donor. This increases the likelihood of hepatocellular cancer recurrence. NMP combined with Extracorporeal Mesh Oxygenation(ECMO) reduces the chance of cancer recurrence and prevents reperfusion. These benefits associated with NMP will be a growth engine in the near future.

Organ Type Insights

Because kidney transplantation is a popular option, kidney failure rates are rising due to the increasing prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), a large share of the market was held by this segment. These MP devices were most commonly used to preserve kidneys, and they dominated the market in 2016.
