A metallocene catalyst is a type of organometallic catalyst that typically contains one or more cyclopentadienyl ligands. The term "metallocene" is derived from the Greek words meta, meaning change; and locenes, which means a place for doing something. Metallocenes are used in homogeneous catalysis to produce polyethylene (PE) and other olefins like propylene (PP). They use alkyl-substituted cyclopentadiene as the metal precursor with methyl groups inserted into its ring structure to react with unsaturated hydrocarbons to produce olefins. Unlike Ziegler-Natta catalysts, these require only molecular hydrogen and no co-catalyst.

Metallocene catalysts are the most active, and thus economical to use, of all known olefin polymerization processes because they can produce polyolefins with high molecular weights while using relatively low temperatures. Low catalyst cost combined with high productivity is a major factor in their popularity for the commercial manufacture of polyethylenes (PE). Metallocene PEs have improved properties over older Ziegler-Natta PEs including higher loadings of unsaturated hydrocarbons that make them more competitive against other plastics such as PVC or PET plastic bottles. The metallocene process also simplifies reactor management by typically requiring only one stepper batch instead of two steps like conventional Ziegler-Natta technology: one for the catalyst, and another one for inert carrier gas.

Normal Metallocene Catalysts:

Normal metallocene catalysts are the first generation of metallocene catalysts. Normal Metallocenes usually offer high productivities and conversion rates while maintaining low levels of olefin impurities. A normal metallocene catalyst is a type of metallocene that has two or more cyclopentadienyl rings. They are usually used in the production of ethylene and propylene. Normal Metallocenes can be classified into three types: Group Two, Group Three, and Alkylaluminum Complexes. The most common normal-metallocene catalysts currently commercially available are group two compounds such as Ziegler Natta catalysts with dinuclear complexes being the newest product development area for new technology developments.

 

 

Dinuclear Metallocene Catalysts:

Dinuclear Metallocene Catalysts are a subset of metallocenes that contain two metal centers per molecule. These catalysts can be represented as R-M(R) x M(R). Dinuclear Metallocene Catalysts offer increased productivity at low feedstock temperatures, enhanced selectivity to olefins, and less coke formation due to higher coordination numbers in the catalyst which leads to more synchronous bimolecular reactions between polymer chains. The increase in chain length is an indication of a lower polydispersity index (PDI) with dinuclear metallocene catalysis while also leading to high fractional crystallinity values of up to 98%. This allows for improved processability through reduced gel content, improved orientation of the polymer chains, and a much lower melting point.

Metallocene Polyethylene (PE) is the most important application segment of this market. This type of metallocene catalyst has been used extensively in PE production, owing to its excellent performance and high efficiency during the polymerization process. Metallocene Polyethylene (PE) has a low density and high strength, it can be produced with a lower expenditure of energy than traditional linear ethylene-alpha olefin copolymers.

 

 

Metaclone Polypropylene (PP):

Metallocene Catalyst is used in the production of Metaclone Polypropylene (PP). It can be either Normal or Dinuclear. The application of metallocene polypropylene (PP) is in the production of petrochemical-based products, such as packaging materials and automotive components. Metallocenes are typically used to synthesize linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) or high-density polyethylene (HDPE). In this case, PE would be a type of PP. The use of PPs can also contribute to fuel economy and reduce emissions from vehicles because they produce less pollution during combustion. Furthermore, PP shares many similar properties with natural rubber but has superior mechanical strength which makes it an ideal material for tire manufacturing among other applications.
