The Global Manganese Market Size of $17.44 billion for the period from 2021-2028 is expected to grow at a CAGR of +0.11% during the forecast period owing to increasing demand for low-cost alloys because they offer better performance than stainless steel (SUS) alloys do when used under conditions with high temperatures or aggressive environments; the rising need for battery storage due to increase consumption of electric vehicles; and the steadily increasing demand for catalysts in petroleum refining processes.
Manganese is an essential element in human nutrition and it has been found that deficiency can lead to diseases such as impairments in cognitive development, mental retardation, epilepsy, and even death. Manganese also plays an important role in bone metabolism, blood clotting process, and immune system functioning.
On the basis of Types, the market is segmented into alloys (FeMn, SiMn, Refined FeMn, and Others) electrolytic manganese, and others.
FeMn alloys are the most commonly used type of manganese material due to their excellent performance and low cost. They are used mainly in steel production. One of the main reasons for their popularity is that they can be used as ferromanganese (a type of iron) to make an alloy with high percentages of manganese content
FeMn alloys also have excellent properties such as resistance against oxidation and sulfur attack, higher strength compared to pure Fe when exposed to corrosive gases at moderate temperatures, good casting ability, and low fluidity at elevated temperatures.
SiMn alloys are the most common alloy of manganese with the silicon content. They have high corrosion resistance to sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid, but they are less resistant than FeMn alloys against water-sodium sulfate (WS) attack because Si has larger polarizability compared to Mn which causes a greater electrostatic attraction between WS and Si atoms.
However, some studies show that when using higher melting point materials such as zirconium for component parts that would be exposed at hazardous temperatures, this type of material is more effective in controlling oxidation than FeMn or steel.
Refined FeMn alloys are typically used for the deposition of Mn-deposits in steel. They provide high oxidation resistance, good ductility, and formability at elevated temperatures, excellent corrosion resistance to sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid but limited by their susceptibility to WS attack.
Electrolytic Manganese alloys are typically used as the anode electrode in electrolysis cells for the production of Mn. They provide high conductivity, good corrosion resistance to weak acids but limited by their susceptibility to WS attack.
On the basis of Application, the market is segmented into the steel industry, battery industry, and others. The batteries segment is expected to hold the largest share of the market owing to the increasing demand for rechargeable batteries in vehicles.
Manganese is used as an alloying agent in steel production. Steel alloys containing manganese are typically classified into three grades, namely ferromanganese, silicon-manganese, and refined iron-manganese. Ferromanganese contains the highest amount of manganese and silicon-manganese is a close second. Refined iron-manganese has the lowest content of both, resulting in lower weldability and strength properties.
Manganese is used in batteries for its chemical properties and high charge capacity. Manganese-based alloys are applied as cathodes to increase the battery life, while at the same time reducing weight and increasing energy density. A type of manganese compound called permanganic acid can be found in alkaline cells that store electricity from solar power systems or wind turbines.
On the basis of Region, the market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Middle East & Africa. In North America the market is led by the US followed by Canada while in Latin American it is lead by Brazil with Mexico coming second. The European region has Germany as its major player closely followed by Italy and France whereas in APAC China dominates the manganese market which is then followed by Japan.
An increase in demand for battery and steel-grade manganese metal is projected to lead the market growth over the forecast period. Increasing the use of permanganates in alkaline cells that store electricity from solar power systems or wind turbines is anticipated to fuel the demand during the forecast period.
In North America, due to increasing investment by automotive industries on green technologies as well as increased utilization of nickel-manganese alloys (NiMn) owing to its high strength, heat resistance, low weight & corrosion resistance properties has resulted in an increase in production volumes of manganese ore. In the Latin American region, Brazil dominates with a large share followed by Mexico whereas the European region has Germany and Italy having significant shares followed by Poland. The Asia Pacific region has China as the key consumer and producer of manganese ore, accounting for nearly 50% in terms of production volume followed by Japan with a share of about 30%. In the Middle East & Africa region, Saudi Arabia dominates the market owing to its growing automotive industry while South Africa is anticipated to be one of the fastest-growing regions during the forecast period on account of its large mining potentiality.
