This share is expected to rise over the next decade due to rapid capacity additions, mainly in emerging economies like China, India and Indonesia. According to the International Hydropower Association, new hydropower was created in 2012 with a capacity of 30 GW and pumped storage of 2GW. From 2014 to 2020, the global hydropower market will grow at 3.9% CAGR

China was the world's largest hydropower producer and held 24.61% of the global market. China is a great destination for hydropower generation because of its rapid capacity growth. China alone was responsible for more than half the total hydro capacity that was installed in 2012 to meet growing energy demands.

Hydropower markets are also supported by government instruments like Feed-I-Tariffs and Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS). The introduction of favorable regulations will also lead to North America experiencing a lucrative growth period.

India is home to one of the most significant hydropower reserves in the world. The government is also taking steps to exploit the potential in unexplored areas. The Brahmaputra river basin, which has one of the largest hydropower potentials in India, is the most underutilized area to be used for hydro-based projects.

In August 2013, President Barack Obama signed the Hydropower Regulation Efficiency Act and Small Conduit Hydropower Development and Rural Jobs Act. These bills are expected to increase hydropower capacity in the United States.

This bill will help to develop existing or new hydropower capacities to unlock untapped market potential. The development of hydropower has been accompanied by massive investment in the regions, particularly Africa, Asia and South America.
