The global emulsified fuel market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.6% during the forecast period from 2021- 2028. Global Emulsified Fuel Market: Forecast By Type (Heavy Oil, Kerosene, Others), Application (Marine, Industrial) and Region (North America, Latin America Europe Asia Pacific Middle East & Africa)", The global emulsified fuel market accounted for USD 12.83 billion in 2018 and is projected to reach USD 18.76 billion by 2028 with the increase in demand for marine fuels owing to stringent regulations on sulfur emissions.

Emulsified fuel is an oil-based liquid that can be used directly as a replacement for crude or jet fuels, resulting in savings of up to 70% on the cost of operation. Emulsified fuel is cheaper and environmentally friendly because it does not contain sulfur. The process involves mixing water with any type of hydrocarbon (oil) at ratios between 99:51 and 85:15; which makes emulsion droplets smaller than 0.01 microns in diameter for use as a transportation fuel. It has been observed that emulsification offers more benefits over other alternatives such as biofuels and coal liquids due to its environmental friendliness, high energy density, low gas emissions during combustion, etc.

On the basis of type, the global emulsified fuel market is segmented into heavy oil, kerosene, and others.

Heavy oils

Heavy oils have been used for many years as an industrial lubricant in industries such as mining, construction work, or power ships. They are also burned on-site using diesel generators where a pipeline connection cannot be supplied. Emulsion of these fuels with water can provide significant advantages over conventional distillation processes because the resultant product contains no sulfur compounds that would cause air pollution problems at combustion time. Heavy Oil usually consists of liquid hydrocarbons which contain molecules made up mostly of chains from 13-20 carbon atoms long (C13 - C 20). The API gravity may range from 28° to 46° depending on their mineral content. They are typically obtained as a residue after the production of light oils and natural gas liquids, sometimes in association with natural bitumen deposits or tar sands. Heavy oil is characterized by a relatively high viscosity index compared to lighter grades due to its higher proportion of heavier alkane molecules that have more complex shapes than those found in conventional crude oils. This property makes heavy oil viscous at low temperatures but easy flowing at operating temperature and pressure when used for transportation purposes such as fuel injection into an internal combustion engine.

Kerosene

Kerosene type of emulsified fuel, which has a higher proportion of hydrocarbons with shorter chains such as butane or pentanes, is used for heating purposes. Kerosene may also be blended with diesel to reduce emissions during combustion.

On the basis of application, the global emulsified fuels are segmented into marines (transportation), industry (power generation), and others.

Marine Transportation

Marine transportation refers to the usage of emulsified fuels in ships and airplanes. Emulsion fluids are mainly used as a fuel for aircraft, diesel-electric submarines, and transport vehicles such as buses. These fluids produce less harmful emissions than traditional fossil fuels and have better thermal efficiency due to their higher flashpoint.

Industry

Industry application of emulsified fuels primarily focuses on power generation using the combustion process. Coal-fired plants are well suited for this purpose because they can burn coal to generate heat, which in turn is used to create steam that turns an electricity generator’s turbine blades. Emulsified fuel may also be blended with diesel in order to reduce emissions during combustion. The downside associated with running a plant solely on heavy oil or kerosene type of emulsion fuel is the high cost per unit of energy generated when compared with conventional fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas.

On the basis of region, emulsified fuel market is segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Middle East & Africa. North America is expected to dominate the global emulsified fuel market during the forecast period followed by Latin America and Europe. North America is anticipated to witness considerable growth during the forecast period owing to its high demand for marine fuels.

The Asia Pacific accounted for nearly half of the world’s kerosene consumption in 2016, which makes it an important emerging region for this type of emulsion based on both historical uses as well as future potential. This is primarily because China has been increasing imports from other countries such as Saudi Arabia that have excess refining capacity.

Growth Factors

The growth of the global emulsified fuel market is driven by an increase in demand for marine fuels as well as expanding renewable energy. Furthermore, ever-increasing crude oil prices are also expected to strengthen their position during the forecast period. In addition, increasing population and industrialization levels coupled with depleting fossil fuel reserves will drive up the demand for these types of oils over the next few years.
