The Global Automotive Airbag Inflator Market size was valued at USD 3 billion in 2016 and is projected to reach USD 4.6 billion by 2028, growing at a CAGR of 5%. The major factors driving this growth include increased safety regulations and increasing awareness about the benefits of airbags in vehicles. The Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest-growing region owing to rapid economic development, improved road infrastructure, and rising demand for passenger cars in emerging economies such as India and China.
Automotive Airbag Inflator is a component of the safety system installed in automobiles. Automotive airbags are designed to protect occupants from injury during an accident by deploying at high speed and expending gas (usually nitrogen) into the passenger compartment to cushion them from impact forces, as well as slowing their rebound before they hit any hard surfaces. The most common use for automotive Airbag Inflators is with frontal-impact collisions but it can also be used during side crashes or rollovers which require protection on both sides of vehicle occupants. Airbags have been observed to reduce occupant fatalities by about 50%.
On the basis of Types, the market is segmented into Pyrotechnic Gas Inflators, Hybrid Gas Inflators, and Stored Gas Inflators.
A pyrotechnic gas inflator is an airbag inflator system where the propellant for deploying the airbags is stored in a container, typically made of metal. Typically, this type of inflatable employs a high-pressure gas generator to produce nitrogen and helium under pressure which leads to rapid expansion upon ignition.
Hybrid gas inflators are a new type of airbag that combines pyrotechnic and stored gas technologies. This makes them much more powerful than traditional compressed-gas units, which means they can deploy with greater force in less time to provide better protection for occupants who would otherwise be at high risk of receiving lethal injuries from the impact of a collision.
Hybrid gas inflators are also less susceptible to cold temperatures and can be used in both front-end airbags (in which they inflate from inside the passenger compartment) or side airbags (where their inflation is triggered by an occupant's weight). They're more expensive than traditional compressed-gas units, however, few cars currently use them for this reason.
Stored Gas Inflators are the most widely used type of inflatable airbag. These gas-inflated devices hold fluid (such as nitrogen, argon) in a sealed metal container that is punctured by an explosive charge at the point where it will deploy and fill with pressurized gas to provide protection for car occupants during collisions or from other impacts such as rollovers. The storage containers can be either rigid cylinders or flexible bladders which contain different volumes of stored gases depending on their design and application requirements. Stored Airbags make up 98% of all automotive inflators currently installed in new vehicles worldwide today according to data from IHS Automotive's Digital Market Intelligence service.
On the basis of Application, the market is segmented into Frontal Airbag, Side Airbag, Curtain Airbag, and Knee Airbag.
A frontal Airbag is a lifesaver for people involved in an accident. It deploys with the help of gas and cushions the impact on the head, chest, abdomen, or pelvis during a collision. The airbag inflator helps to inflate the airbag quickly by releasing stored gases into it. This leads to quick inflation of airbags that protect occupants from injury or death when there is a frontal collision between two vehicles at high speed.
The side airbag will deploy the inflatable tube by inflation pressure when a collision is detected (e.g., on both sides of the door). The inflated sheet has two or three ribs to hold it in shape and prevent rolling up once deployed, which reduces injury risk for occupants seated next to an inflating side airbag.
Curtain airbags are found on the back of cars and trucks. They're designed to protect occupants' heads, torsos, and chests from injury in a side-impact crash with another vehicle or object such as a tree or pole. Curtain airbag usually deployed through vents located at each window pillar due to which it is also called ventilated curtain airbag. It works by deploying an inflatable plastic barrier that extends across most of the width of the rear passenger compartment between both head restraints while overlapping part way down either side windows (typically 60% coverage).
Knee airbags are used in the passenger seat to protect passengers from injuries caused by frontal collisions. The knee airbag is designed for use as a supplemental restraint device (SRS) to be used with an inflatable front-passenger air bag and/or a vehicle's safety belt system, which are standard equipment on vehicles since 1998.
Knee Airbags are beneficial because it protects adults sitting in the back seats of cars where there isn’t enough space between the back of the front seats and the rear seat.
On the basis of Region, the market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Middle East & Africa. North America is the leading region in the global automotive airbag inflator market owing to factors such as high vehicle production and strict regulatory laws on emission norms.
Europe is anticipated to show a steady growth rate due to increasing awareness among consumers for the safety features of vehicles and increasing demand for electric vehicles (EVs). The Asia Pacific is projected to grow exponentially during 2021-2028 due to economic development coupled with stringent government regulations pertaining to emissions as well as an increased preference towards luxury cars that are equipped with advanced safety features like airbags.
The growth has been fueled by increasing demand for safety features in automobiles and efforts made by governments towards establishing product standards. For instance, American Automobile Association (AAA) estimates that about 34 people die every day due to car crashes caused mostly because cars lack proper safety features such as seat belts or airbags. Hence, government agencies are imposing strict regulations on vehicle manufacturers with regard to installing advanced technologies like ABS brakes, collision sensors, and active driver assistance systems in vehicles which can reduce accidents significantly across the country.
The deployment of these advanced driving assistance systems is expected to lead the airbag inflator market in the coming years. These devices are considered a vital component of any vehicle due to their life-saving capabilities which have been established through various crash tests and studies over the past few decades.
