When used in conjunction with products and materials such as coatings, organic antimicrobial additives provide protection against odor- and stain-causing microbes. triclosan, for example, inhibits microbe growth by causing a chemical reaction that damages their cell walls. The cell walls are perforated and exempt metabolites from the cells, which causes other functions to be disrupted. This prevents microbes like bacteria and algae from reproducing. Due to the high levels of toxicity, the ban on the sale and use of OBPA (triclosan) and triclosan will slow down the growth of organic types over the forecast period.
