Penicillins are antibiotics derived from Penicillium fungi. They include natural penicillin, semisynthetic derivatives, and synthetic varieties. These drugs can be used to destroy bacteria that infect humans and animals both in the body (systemically) or in contact with tissues inside the mouth or nose (locally). Antibiotics like penicillin cannot kill viruses such as influenza, HIV, or Ebola virus but they may stop them from reproducing more effectively than would otherwise be possible.

 

Incosamides:

Incosamides are a class of antibiotics that inhibit the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. The three original Incosamide families were penams, bacitracin, and polymyxins respectively which are still used today; however, there has been an increased number of new molecules developed in recent years. Some examples include daptomycin (synthetic), avoparcin (biosynthetic), and tylosin (semi-synthetic). These compounds can be classified by their molecular weight with the lower MWs being less potent than those with higher ones and some have limited activity against Gram-negative bacteria including Escherichia coli.

 

Macrolides:

Macrolides are a type of antibiotic that is most commonly used to treat people with infections. They may also be given in high doses for short periods as prophylaxis against respiratory tract infection caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniaem, Haophilus influenza), (type b and Streptococcus pneumoniae; prevention or treatment of myositis/myalgia syndrome due to M. muscularis.
