It can be manufactured by reacting fluorobenzene with phosgene or carbon tetrachloride in presence of an aluminum oxide catalyst. This product has been used as an intermediate in synthesizing pharmaceutical products like phenylbutazone, salicylic acid derivatives, acetaminophen, paracetamol, etc.; pesticides like carbofuran; and other industrial products such as amino acids, polymers, etc. This product is also used as a catalyst in the production of certain fatty chemicals.

Industrial Grade Trifluoromethylsalicylic Acid is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that has been used for pain relief and fever reduction in muscle, joint, or tendon inflammation. The product acts by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis which leads to decreased levels of inflammatory mediators like leukotrienes. It is also prescribed as an analgesic and antipyretic agent in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis & other conditions associated with chronic pain resulting from injury or disease. It works by blocking enzymes called cyclooxygenase I and II (COX). This reduces the production of certain hormones such as prostacyclins and thromboxanes. The decrease in prostacyclins leads to a reduction of high blood pressure, while the reduced production of thromboxane A(TXA) is thought to be responsible for NSAIDs' ability to reduce inflammation and pain in the joints. Inhibition of COX-II may also prevent platelet aggregation, leading to anti-inflammatory and antithrombotic effects which can contribute to a reduced incidence of heart attacks or stroke following myocardial infarction.

The pharmaceutical grade is a more purified form of the chemical. It can be used as an intermediate to make other chemicals, and it's also usable in medicine. Pharmaceutical Grade trifluoromethylsalicylic acid has lower impurities than industrial-grade trifluoromethylsalicylic acid products that might affect properties such as color or melting point. The pharmaceutical grade of this product is for medical purposes in the form of tablets or capsules. It possesses an acid content of less than 0.25% and a melting point below 50°C, as well as meeting other standards set by pharmacopeias such as USP, BP, and JPEtna.
