Global Nondestructive Test Equipment Market by Type (Ultrasonic, Eddy Current, Electromagnetic, Radiography, Thermography), By Application (Manufacturing, Petrochemical, Aerospace, Automotive, Power Generation) and Region (North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Middle East & Africa), Forecast To 2028
The global nondestructive test equipment market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.6% during 2018-2028, with a market size estimated at USD 18.78 Billion in 2028. The major drivers for the growth are rising investments in infrastructure development and increasing demand for quality control of products manufactured by end consumers, which will help propel the demand for nondestructive testing equipment globally.
Nondestructive testing equipment, also known as NDT is a group of devices or techniques used to detect the presence of flaws and other damage on structures without having to tear them apart. The objective is not to be destructive in order to determine whether something has been damaged. These are methods that can see cracks such as ultrasound or radiography but do not cause any type of physical change.
The most common nondestructive tests generally fall into one category: Defect Material Identification (DMI). DMI focuses on finding defects by material identification with an electromagnetic, ultrasonic, surface acoustic wave technique-based system or eddy current-based system for ferromagnetic materials; magnetic particle inspection method which looks at magnetism transference in ferrous materials; and liquid penetrant inspection which uses bituminous emulsions.
Nondestructive testing equipment is used to detect the presence of flaws and other damage on structures without having to tear them apart. The objective is not to be destructive in order to determine whether something has been damaged. These are methods that can see cracks such as ultrasound or radiography but do not cause any type of physical change.
On the basis of type, the global nondestructive test equipment market is segmented into ultrasonic, eddy current, electromagnetic, and radiography.
Ultrasonic
An ultrasonic nondestructive testing (NDT) equipment is a device that uses sound waves to detect tiny flaws in an object. These devices are very popular because they can find small cracks and imperfections before they become a problem. They work by sending out high-frequency sounds then measuring the reflected, or echo, of those frequencies from the inside of whatever's being tested.
Eddy Current
Eddy current testing is a form of electromagnetic nondestructive examination. Eddy currents are generated by electric currents induced in conductors as they move through them and interact with their magnetic fields. The electrical properties of the material being tested can be measured to determine the composition, size distribution, shape, density, and surface quality without damaging or altering the sample item under test.
Electromagnetic
Electromagnetic nondestructive test equipment is used to inspect a variety of electrical and electronic components. These include transformers, capacitors, cables, motors, boilers, and turbines. Electromagnetic inspection can be done on-site or remotely via an antenna-coupled electromagnetic system that detects the condition of structures from a distance.
Radiography
Radiation-based nondestructive testing (NDT) is a type of industrial inspection technique that uses ionizing radiation as a diagnostic tool to detect internal defects in equipment and materials. This includes the use of gamma rays, X-rays, beta particles, or neutron beams. The NDT process can be either destructive or non-destructive depending on its implementation:
Destructive radiography - An uncovered part is scanned with ionizing radiation; any induced changes are detected by measuring attenuation values before and after scanning, which provides information about thicknesses and densities inside the inspected object. Non-destructive radiography - A beam of radiation penetrates through an intact surface without damaging it so that features within the object can be studied without altering the object.
On the basis of application, the global nondestructive test equipment market is segmented into manufacturing, petrochemical, aerospace, and automotive
Manufacturing
Manufacturing is the production of goods or materials within an industrial process. It may also refer to the manufacturing industry, a grouping of industries that share similar processes.
In this type of application, nondestructive test equipment is used on physical components and subassemblies both before and after they have been assembled into finished products. NDE can be performed in-line - which means as items move through the assembly line together with their metal parts interfacing appropriately without interruption or delay; post-assembly – where one part has already been fully assembled but will not pass along until cleared by inspection (for example when inspecting for cracks); or at random points throughout the factory floor if there is reason to suspect that something might go wrong at a certain point.
When inspecting metal parts, the two types of nondestructive test equipment widely used are ultrasonic and eddy current testing. Ultrasonic inspection is typically used when there’s a need to inspect inclusions that could not be detected by other methods or because it can detect defects under paint coatings and beneath surfaces inaccessible for direct viewing. Eddy's current testing on the other hand provides detailed information about subsurface flaws such as porosity, cracks, and corrosion - this type of inspection usually takes place outside of production lines where workers have access to open space rather than within machines (e.g., turbines).
Petrochemical
Applications of nondestructive testing in the petroleum industry include:
Internal inspection (checks for cracks or corrosion); External Inspection (visible flaws, like pitting) and Corrosion measurement. NDT can also be used to check pressure vessels and piping systems for leaks.
All petrochemical companies are inspected for corrosion, cracks, and other flaws. Cracks can cause the pipeline to burst or leak, which could have a catastrophic effect on an area's environment. Further testing is needed to find out where exactly the leaks come from such as ultrasound inspection of pipe seams and threaded connections. Ultrasonic inspections attempt to detect penetrations in metal piping by sending sound waves through it at different frequencies (usually between 20-200 kHz). Once it finds the penetration points (or leaks) that indicate where there might be a problem with corroding pipes, it will then need further tests like Magnetic Flux Leakage Testing or Optical Emission Spectroscopy to find out where the cracks are located and what is causing them.
Aerospace
In the aviation industry, nondestructive testing is important to ensure flight safety by identifying any possible defects on airplanes before taking off from the airport - which may lead to catastrophic accidents due to structural failures during flights if left unnoticed. It's imperative that these inspections take place regularly so as not to risk human lives at any given moment. Aircraft inspection can be carried out using X-ray techniques, visual inspections, or even ultrasonic testing.
X-rays are employed to inspect the interior of an airplane's fuselage for any possible defects that might not be noticeable visually as well as in other parts such as control surfaces and joints. Visual inspection is mainly carried out during final quality checks before a plane leaves the production line and can identify surface corrosion due to metal fatigue which may need attention from technicians prior to taking off. Ultrasonic test methods involve placing sensors on critical points along the exterior of the aircraft while sending pulses into it using ultrasound waves - this detects flaws beneath surface without having to dismantle anything (which would risk losing expensive materials) so they then get fixed before flight time.
Automotive
Nondestructive testing is used extensively in the automotive industry. The application has been increasing over the past few years due to strict regulations and rising safety concerns from new technologies like autonomous cars or driver-less vehicles. NDT checks products for defects before they are sold, which can be costly if not found on time. For example, a defective hood could result in increased fuel efficiency as it would have more surface area exposed to airflow than an undamaged part of the vehicle would provide.
On the basis of region, the global nondestructive test equipment market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Middle East & Africa. North America possesses the largest share of the global market in 2017 and is predicted to have a higher CAGR than any other region over 2018-2028. The growth in this region can be attributed to its strong automotive industry which has been recently experiencing rapid developments with regard to autonomous cars or driverless vehicles.
North America
In terms of revenue, NA was expected to account for 36% by 2024 owing to increasing demand from manufacturers coupled with high levels of end-use applications such as aerospace and manufacturing sectors during that period. The companies operating within this area are focusing on developing new technologies like Augmented Reality so they can be able to offer more than the traditional nondestructive testing services.
Latin America
The Latin American market is expected to show a CAGR of 12% over 2018-2028, owing mainly to the increasing number of manufacturing facilities in Brazil and Mexico, which also means that there will be increased demand for NDT equipment within these countries. Some major players operating in this region are Industria de Instrumentos Nuclicios y Radiografia(INDINAR), LABTECHNICA SRL, and General Electric Company.
Europe
Europe was expected to have a revenue share of 28% by 2024 due to high levels of manufacturing activity and aging infrastructure within the region.
Growth Factors
The major factors driving the growth are increasing safety standards for critical infrastructure projects and growing demand for NDT services. Further, government support has led to an increase in R&D initiatives and innovations that have improved production efficiency and reduced costs.
