Global Neurointerventional Device Market by Type (Embolic Coils, Neurovascular Stents (Carotid Stents and Intracranial Stents), Neurovascular Thrombectomy Devices, Intrasaccular Devices, Embolic Protection Devices, Others), By Application (Hospitals, Ambulatory Surgical Centers, Others) and Region (North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Middle East & Africa), Forecast To 2028
The Global Neurointerventional Device Market size is expected to grow from USD 3.5 billion in 2021 to USD 4.8 billion by 2028, at a CAGR of 5.2%. The major factors driving the growth are increasing incidence rates of neurological disorders and an increasing number of open-heart surgeries that require neurovascular interventions such as carotid endarterectomy and treatment for intracranial aneurysms.
Neurointerventional Devices refer to medical devices used to treat diseases that affect the central nervous system (CNS) or peripheral nerves, namely blood vessels supplying the CNS or other parts of the body with oxygenated blood flow like arteries and veins through vascular access points in these areas.
They are designed to treat conditions that include acute neurological events such as stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA), chronic vascular diseases, including carotid artery stenosis, and intracranial atherosclerosis. Other applications also include treatment of aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), venous thrombosis, or other cerebral vein occlusions.
On the basis of Types, the market is segmented into Embolic Coils, Neurovascular Stents (Carotid Stents and Intracranial Stents), Neurovascular Thrombectomy Devices, Intrasaccular Devices, Embolic Protection Devices.
Embolic Coils:
Embolic coils are small, sterile tubes that can be inserted into the blood vessels to block clots and prevent them from traveling. Once they are in place, the coils expand and obliterate any clot within their path of travel. They do this by getting caught up on other structures within the vessel or lodging themselves against valves. The result is a decrease in flow through the artery where these devices were positioned as well as downstream arterial branches which will limit blood supply for tissues served by those arteries.
Neurovascular Stents (Carotid Stents and Intracranial Stents):
Neurovascular stents are devices used to keep veins open after surgery. They can be permanent or temporary depending on the type of procedure. The main use of neurovascular stents is for the treatment of strokes or aneurysms. They are also used in the following treatments:
- Treatment of carotid obstructions from atherosclerotic plaques, tumors, or blood clots (carotid endarterectomy).
- To decrease symptoms caused by narrowed brain arteries (cerebral angioplasty with stent placement).
- In conjunction with embolic protection devices to keep stroke tissue cleared after a procedure like DSAEK.
Neurovascular Thrombectomy Devices:
Neurovascular thrombectomy devices are used in neurointerventional procedures to remove blood clots from cerebral vessels. These devices can be divided into two categories: mechanical and endovascular (catheter-based). Mechanical thrombectomy is a surgical procedure performed by inserting an inflatable balloon through the femoral artery, then releasing it up against the clot with enough pressure to break up and retrieve it via suction.
This technique has been largely replaced over time as there have been complications such as bleeding or arterial injury that may result from the surgery. Endovascular methods work on a smaller scale than their counterparts, using catheters placed inside arteries of the brain under x-ray guidance, which allows for more precise clot retrieval.
Intrasaccular Devices:
Intrasaccular devices are a type of neuro-interventional device that is inserted through the bloodstream and into an artery or vein in order to treat blockages. These obstructions can be caused by blood clots, diseased arteries, tumors, and other sources of irritation.
An IntraSaccular Device typically consists of two parts: an occlusion catheter with one end designed for injection and another that's larger enough for infusion; and a guidewire which allows the surgeon to move throughout vessels inside your body until they reach their destination. A doctor usually inserts these devices using fluoroscopy equipment (a special X-ray technique). This assists them in positioning the catheter as close as possible to its target location within your brain or other organs.
Embolic Protection Devices:
Embolic protection devices are designed to prevent the formation of a clot that could block blood flow through an artery. These can be used with catheters, which are inserted into a vein in order to reach the blocked artery, or by direct injection where it would travel up and out of the brain (intra-arterial). The embolic protection device can then stop any clots from forming within this area.
On the basis of Application, the market is segmented into Hospitals, Ambulatory Surgical Centers, and Others. Of these, the hospitals' segment accounted for the largest share of 37% in 2017. Hospitals use neurointerventional devices to treat a number of conditions, including hemorrhagic stroke. The device is inserted into the brain via the catheter and operated through remote control or by physician hands with the live video feed. Stents are used to remove blood clots from blocked arteries in the head (carotid artery) or neck (vertebral artery).
They may also be used for the treatment of aneurysms in those areas as well as other intracranial lesions like arteriovenous malformations among others. Intrasaccular devices are often deployed during surgery on cerebral aneurismal to prevent rupture and restore cerebrospinal fluid drainage channels that were compressed when the mass was being removed.
On the basis of Region, the market is segmented into North America, Asia Pacific (APAC), Europe, and Latin America. The market in APAC is anticipated to grow at the highest rate owing to a rapidly increasing population coupled with an increase in the number of acute neurological diseases such as cerebral palsy, stroke, and spinal cord injury due to accidents or natural disasters.
Growth Factors For The Global Neurointerventional Device Market:
The neurointerventional device market is expanding due to the growing number of risky procedures, increasing incidence rates of cerebrovascular and neurological disorders that require neurointervention. Growing incidences in the age group 50 years or more are also driving growth for this segment given their increased risk factor (especially on carotid artery stenosis) as compared to other age groups. The presence of a wide variety of devices with varied functionalities, which have been developed by different manufacturers consequent upon growing demand from hospitals worldwide forms another major driver for the global Neurointerventional Device Market.
