Global MOSFET Transistor Market by Type (Low Pressure, Medium Pressure), By Application (Energy & Power, Consumer Electronics, Inverter & UPS, Electric Vehicle, Industrial System, Other) and Region (North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Middle East & Africa), Forecast To 2028
The global MOSFET transistor market is expected to reach USD 1,693.1 million by 2028 from USD 903.8 million in 2018, growing at a CAGR of 8.3% during the forecast period from 2019-2028. North America accounted for the largest share of the market in terms of revenue and will continue to do so till 2023 due to strong demand from the energy & power application segment followed by the Asia Pacific owing to the increasing adoption rate of electric vehicles.
A MOSFET transistor is a semiconductor device that uses the metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect. The term stands for “metal oxide silicon,” which refers to the layer of oxide built on top of silicon used in its construction. They are available in many types and can be made from different materials including gallium phosphate (GaP), titanium dioxide (TiO), and silicon carbide or sapphire crystals. MOSFETS has three terminals: source, gate, and drain. A voltage applied to the gate terminal controls how much current flows between drain and source. This makes them very useful as switches because they turn on when their gate wire is given power with direct current while off without it.
On the basis of type, the global MOSFET transistor market is segmented into low-pressure and medium pressure.
Low-Pressure
A low-pressure MOSFET transistor is an integrated circuit that modulates the flow of current through a semiconductor component. It uses a field-effect to control voltage by placing metal electrodes on each side of a dielectric layer or gate insulator and applying charge onto the surface to create an electric field. This allows for more power per square inch in comparison to conventional transistors because it can operate at much lower voltages while still being fast enough for most applications. Low-pressure devices are used in power inverters, where they operate with a voltage of up to 500 volts.
Medium-pressure
Medium-pressure metal oxide silicon on insulator (MOS) FETs are used in high power applications such as inverters and UPS systems where they are usually referred to as IGBTs because of their similar function but different technology. They can handle much higher voltages than input level devices like bipolar junction transistors (BJTs), which makes them attractive for high-power conversion. While BJTs are limited to around 600V, medium-pressure MOSFETs can handle voltages of up to 1000VDC or higher. This makes them an attractive choice for applications where the AC input voltage is greater than 400 volts since a single unit can replace multiple devices with lower maximum ratings.
On the basis of application, the global MOSFET transistors market is segmented into energy & power, consumer electronics, inverter and UPS, electric vehicle, industrial system & others.
Energy and Power
The MOSFET transistor is used in all types of energy and power applications, but its main application has been in the generation of electricity. The MOSFET transistors are commonly found inside a power plant’s generator to help convert mechanical motion into electrical current that can be transmitted across long distances. In this way, it helps generate clean renewable energy for remote regions without access to other sources of electricity.
In addition, these devices have also been widely used in manufacturing furnaces as well as solar panels at homes or business centers. Solar panels rely on semiconductor-based photovoltaic cells made from silicon which produce an electric field when exposed to sunlight. These fields then create voltage gradients with electrons flowing through the circuit. This voltage gradient is then transformed into electric power for everyday use.
Consumer Electronics
MOSFET Transistor is used in consumer electronics. It is mainly used as a switch to control the flow of current or voltage from one point to another in a circuit. It is available in both low-pressure and medium pressure versions. Low-pressure MOSFETs are used as switches, while the medium pressure ones are mainly employed for power devices such as converters and rectifiers. These transistors can be found in consumer electronics equipment like LCD TVs or monitors.
Inverters and UPS
MOSFET transistors are used in inverters and UPS for their ability to convert an alternating current (AC) without any losses. MOSFET transistor usually requires a higher voltage than the input because it can’t handle DC power, but that is not an issue with AC which oscillates between zero volts and line voltage alternately. One of the most popular uses of these devices is motor control because they dissipate little heat when switching off or on quickly as seen in electric motors.
Electric Vehicle
An electric vehicle may use a MOSFET in its inverter, a device that converts direct current from the battery to alternating current for power consumers. The driver controls the speed of the engine using a throttle which is attached directly to the MOSFET's input terminal.
Industrial System
Transistors are devices that can amplify and switch electronic signals. They're found in a variety of industrial systems, including power supplies, solar inverters. For example, when the battery pack is drained below a certain voltage level, the system will automatically turn on to recharge it so that over time there's always enough charge for constant use. Using transistors helps reduce standby energy consumption by up to 80%.
On the basis of region, the global MOSFET transistor market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, and the Asia Pacific. Other regions such as the Middle East & Africa are expected to witness moderate growth in the MOSFET transistor market during the forecast period 2021-2028.
In the market of MOSFET transistor, the North American region accounts for a major share in overall revenue and is expected to dominate during the forecast period with more than 40% of the global MOSFET transistor market. Europe follows as the second-largest regional segment accounting for 25% followed by the Asia Pacific (15%), Latin America (13%), and Middle East & Africa (11%).
Growth Factors
There are various factors expected to provide growth for the MOSFET transistor market in the future. These include growing demand from consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and industrial system applications; increasing requirement of power-efficient semiconductor devices; the need for reducing costs associated with manufacturing by developing innovative materials that can replace silicon as a component material for chips and other components used in electronic products; increasing adoption of low-pressure technology which is less expensive than medium or high-pressure technologies.
