Global Molecular Sieve Market by Type (Type 3A, Type 4A, Type 5A, Type 13X, Type Y, Pentacil, Mordenite), By Application (Catalyst, Adsorbent, Desiccants) and Region (North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Middle East & Africa), Forecast To 2028
The Global Molecular Sieve Market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.8% during the forecast period. The global molecular sieve market size was valued at USD 1,820 million in 2018 and is projected to reach USD 2,472 million by 2028, growing at a CAGR of 4.8%.
A molecular sieve refers to a crystalline material with pores of uniform size and shape. These materials are made up of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) which can be either in their natural form or synthetic. MOF molecules have rigid structures, so when they are formed into porous crystals, the resulting crystal has tiny holes that allow it to selectively absorb water molecules from other compounds. This makes molecular sieves an excellent desiccant for removing moisture from food products such as wheat grain because these devices only function on specific gases like water vapor rather than all hydrocarbons found in the air.
On the basis of type, the molecular sieve is segmented into Type-13X, Type Y, Pencil, and Mordenite.
Type-13X
A Type-13X molecular sieve has a cationic charge and is primarily used in the production of polyethylene. It can also be found as an adsorbent, catalyst or desiccant because it will selectively remove ions from gases and liquids based on their ionic size. The 13x variety was engineered to have fewer channels than other varieties which means less diffusion between particles within the same crystal lattice structure. This creates more uniform particle sizes for increased performance with each use; however, this makes them difficult to produce without costly equipment that produces high volumes at a time.
Type Y
A Type Y molecular sieve is an amorphous solid material with uniform particle size and high surface area for optimal thermal conductivity in small-scale gas heaters and furnaces. Type Y is a type of molecular sieve that was developed after Type 13X. It has the same properties as other types of molecular sieves, but it can be used in a higher temperature and pressure environment than others. This means that Type Y has many more applications for commercial use.
Pencil
A pencil molecular sieve is a large-sized, cylindrical molecule with an irregular hexagonal cross-section. It has the appearance of pencil lead in its early stage. Pencil molecular sieves are made up of zeolite type A and have wide pore sizes that range from 60 to 120 angstroms. They provide high adsorption capacity for gases such as nitrogen and carbon dioxide but it can also be used for hydrogen sulfide removal which would not work well on other types of molecular sieves due to their smaller pores size.
Mordenite
Mordenite molecular sieves are a type of activated alumina. They have an isoelectric point that ranges from 14 to 18, which can be controlled by the heating temperature in its synthesis phase. The higher the isoelectric point for mordenite, the less expensive it will be.
On the basis of application, the molecular sieve is segmented into Catalyst, Adsorbent, and Desiccants.
Catalyst
Molecular sieve is mainly used in the refining of petroleum gas as a catalyst and adsorbent. The molecular sieves are responsible for breaking down hydrogen sulfide to produce soap, which is then further processed into sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid can be used in many ways from manufacturing fertilizers to producing other chemicals like ammonium nitrate and plastics such as nylon. Nitric acid produced by hydrolyzing ammonia with water can also include desiccants if the liquid form will not work because it vaporizes at a lower pressure than solid forms do, thus making them more effective when they need to absorb moisture quickly or during small fluctuations of temperature.
Adsorbent
Molecular sieves are used in adsorbent applications. Adsorption is a method of removing impurities from gas or liquid by using the surface area and chemical qualities of an absorbent material such as a molecular sieve. Molecular sieves can be used to separate components based on their size, shape, amount, or type.
Desiccants
Desiccants are typically used in industrial processes that require drying or dehumidification. For example, molecular sieves can dehumidify liquids and gases by adsorbing water vapor out of the air through a process called "adsorption." In addition to their use as a desiccant for dry materials such as paper, pharmaceuticals, and food ingredients, they may also be used in refrigeration systems to remove moisture from inside the system while maintaining low temperatures. Desiccants sold under these applications are often specially shaped or packed (e.g., pellets) to suit specific needs of different industries - e.g., porous mordenite is preferred where humidity control is required over extended periods of time at high temperature; pencil molecular sieves are preferred where humidity control is required over short periods of time at low temperatures.
on the basis of region, the global molecular sieve market is segmented into North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Rest of the World. North America is expected to dominate the molecular sieve market owing to its high level of technological advancements in this domain and the presence of a number of major players operating across the region.
Europe followed by Asia-Pacific are forecasted as two other lucrative markets for molecular sieves because they offer low-cost manufacturing due to the availability of raw materials and labor at competitive rates, respectively. The Rest Of The World is anticipated to be the least attractive regional segment for molecular sieves over the 2021 - 2028 period as it has lower levels of industrial development.
Growth Factors
Growing demand for nitrogen-fixing and phosphorus fertilizer is a key factor driving the molecular sieve market. Increasing population globally will also drive the growth of this industry. The increasing urbanization in developing countries and lack of arable land to grow crops may help spur on demand for these products, as well as other stabilizers such as ammonium sulfate or calcium nitrate.
Growth in oil & gas exploration activities that require hydrogen sulfide removal equipment might be another driver that would positively impact the global molecular sieve market size during the forecast period (2017-2028).
