Global Microdisplays Market by Type (OLED, LCoS, LCD, DLP), By Application (Commercial, Consumer, Automotive, Industrial and Enterprise, Military, Defense, and Aerospace, Medical, Education, Others) and Region (North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Middle East & Africa), Forecast To 2028
Global Microdisplays Market is projected to grow from $1.2 billion in 2018 to $6.9 billion by 2028, at an estimated CAGR of 16% during the forecast period. The increasing demand for microdisplay panels in commercial and consumer applications such as smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, VR headsets, and gaming devices has driven the market growth over the past few years.
Microdisplays are small-sized screens that have limited resolution and power consumption compared to a full-sized TV or projector. They are usually used in mobile devices like smartphones, tablets, etc. Microdisplay is the only type of display that can be put on any device such as glasses, car dashboards, and much more.
They are also better for some applications than large displays. Microdisplays are suitable to be used in portable devices that require low-power consumption and small form factors, such as smartphones or tablets because they have a lower resolution compared to the common TV screens which consume more power and occupy much larger space. They can also be integrated into other types of displays like eyeglasses, car dashboards, etc.
On the basis of Type, the market is segmented into OLED, LCoS, LCD, and DLP.
OLED:
OLED displays are the latest and most advanced type of microdisplay technology. They’re a flexible, lightweight display that provides vivid colors with high contrast ratios. OLEDs offer higher pixel density than LCD or LCoS solutions. In addition to being thinner than other types of microdisplays, they have no need for backlight thanks to their self-illuminating pixels; this decreases power consumption in comparison to LCD screens. This allows them to be used in many more applications as well – such as smartwatches and VR headsets – where space is at a premium.
LCoS:
LCoS stands for liquid crystal on silicon, which is a type of microdisplay that uses liquid crystals. While LCDs are made up of pixels in the form of an array with each pixel emitting light as needed to create images, LCoS displays use liquid crystals instead because they have better contrast ratios and faster response times than their LC counterparts.
LCoS is used in most types of displays and has a wide range of uses. LCoS can be found in small handheld devices such as smartphones, tablets, GPS navigation systems for cars, personal digital assistants (PDAs), cameras, camcorders, and computers.
LCD:
LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. It is a flat panel display technology that utilizes liquid crystals to generate an image by either passing light through or reflecting it off the surface of the display. LCD displays are typically much thinner than other technologies, like OLEDs and plasma panels but they can be heavier if used in large-screen sizes.
They also offer less contrast ratio than some of their peers; however, LCD televisions have been increasing this aspect over time as well as improving quality with color accuracy and brightness levels.
DLP:
Digital Light Processing (DLP) is a projection display technology that uses an image processing device, called a Digital Micromirror Device. The individual DMD chips are made up of arrays of microscopic mirrors arranged in grids. When the mirror moves to certain angles controlled by electrical signals from control circuitry connected to its electrodes, the light will reflect off it and be projected onto screens or into optical fibers which carries them elsewhere for use as input devices such as HDTVs.
On the basis of Application, the market is segmented he global market is segmented into Consumer, Automotive, Industrial and Enterprise, Military, Defense & Aerospace.
The usage of microdisplays in consumer devices such as smartphones has grown over the years with manufacturers including them in their new products. The trend for smartphone screens to be increased from four inches up to six or seven inches have made it easier for consumers to watch videos on the go without having a large display (magazine). This application has seen an increase in demand due mainly to the need for a better quality viewing experience while watching movies on mobile phones and tablets (market research report). As technology advances towards the 2020s decade many appliances will start using LCD TVs instead of CRT televisions which are largely being replaced by OLED screens.
Microdisplays are being used in industrial applications such as factory automation, medical devices, and military systems. As the technology evolves these displays will be manufactured with even faster refresh rates, high resolutions, and an increased number of pixels to create a better viewing experience for users. This is especially important if one considers that automation is expected to grow at an annual rate of 27% over the next ten years generating more demand for microdisplays from this market segment as well (market research report). For example, General Electric’s Advanced Manufacturing division has teamed up with SK Hynix to produce advanced displays for its Factory Automation System which includes features like human-machine interface LCD monitors and OLED displays.
On the basis of Region, the market is segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Middle East & Africa. In 2017, North American was followed by Europe as the largest regional microdisplays market with a share of 44% in revenue generation. The Asia Pacific followed closely behind European countries within this area while Middle East & Africa accounted for less than 20%. It can be concluded that there are major growth opportunities for manufacturers operating in the Asia Pacific due to their proximity to developing markets like China and India which will become increasingly important consumers going forward. With an average annual increase of 11%, it has been projected that APAC would generate over $550 million worth of revenues at the end of 2020 from these displays.
