Global Inductive Loop Vehicle Detector Market by Type (Saw Cut Loop, Performed Loop), By Application (Traffic Management, Parking Management, Security Gates, Drive-thru Restaurants, Security Bollards, Others) and Region (North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Middle East & Africa), Forecast To 2028
The global inductive loop vehicle detector market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2019 to 2028 and reach an estimated value of USD 8,092 million in 2028 from USD 4,819 million in 2018. North America dominated the market with its share accounted for about 66% in 2018 due to the high demand for security gates and drive-thru restaurants. The Asia Pacific is expected to show the fastest growth during the forecast period on account of the increased adoption of these devices owing to increasing traffic congestion and rising crime rates.
An inductive loop in the road is a device that detects the presence of metal objects such as cars. It is typically used to measure traffic flow and for controlling automated gates at entrances or exits to site locations. The technology senses vehicles by an electromagnetic field, which can be calibrated according to vehicle size and type, thus providing accurate detection data.
An inductive loop vehicle detector is an electronic device that detects the presence of a metal such as steel, iron, or aluminum. This type of detection uses electromagnetic induction to sense the conductivity and determine if it belongs to a car or any other metallic object. An inductive loop vehicle detector can be found in many places including parking lots, drive-thru restaurants, and retail stores - anywhere there are vehicles coming through often enough for them to interfere with daily operations due to their sheer numbers.
On the basis of type, the global inductive loop vehicle detector market is segmented into saw-cut loop, performed loop.
Saw-Cut Loop
A saw-cut loop is the simplest form of inductive vehicle detector (IVD). It is a wire or runner, which has been installed in most intersections and parking areas. This type of IVD consists of two loops that are set up perpendicular to one another. One runs parallel to the curb line while the other begins at an angle to the curb line. This is a cheaper, easier install type of IVD that has been in use for many years and still remains popular today.
A saw-cut loop consists of two loops: one runs parallel with the curbside while the other starts at an angle from it. A wire or runner installed perpendicular to both loops is a saw-cut loop. A wire or runner that has been installed perpendicular to both loops forms a saw cut loop, which consists of two loops: one running parallel with the curbside while the other starts at an angle from it. Saw-cut IVDs are cheaper and easier to install than perforated ones and are still popular today.
Performed Loop
The performance loop is the current preferred type of IVD, as it can be easily installed on new or existing pavement. The wire loops are laid out in a close-spaced rectangular pattern with one end extending to and past the curb line for connection to signal heads placed at intersections. A sensing head connected to the loop detects the vehicle's metal body and transmits a signal back to the control box.
On the basis of application, the global inductive loop vehicle detector market is segmented into traffic management, parking management, security gates, drive-thru restaurants, and others.
Traffic Management
The applications of inductive loop vehicle detector in traffic management are divided into two categories: (i) detection and feedback control loops, which is used to sense the number of vehicles passing a certain point, typically at an intersection with signal lights; and (ii) pre-emption loops that are embedded within the pavement. The former application can be used for the detection of queues at intersections and is popular in Western Europe. The latter application can be used to minimize delay created by red-light running while maintaining safe speeds on green signals, as well as providing a warning signal when vehicles are detected crossing through an intersection after the light has turned yellow or red.
Parking Management
The parking management segment is sub-divided into the security gates and drive-thru restaurant applications. In this section, we will be looking at how inductive loops are used in these two applications. Inductive loops are installed on a traffic island to count vehicles as they enter or exit a secured area such as a city center, mall car park, office building, or residential blocks.
Security Gates
In security gates, inductive loops are installed on both sides of each gate to count vehicles entering or exiting a secured area such as the city center, mall car park, office building, or residential blocks. The loops will be connected to an electronic counter which is either mounted above the entry/exit point in es of security gates or installed on the ground near it. It is worth noting that inductive loops do not need to be positioned in a straight line, as they can curve and bend so long as their paths are connected electrically.
The vehicle's weight will be detected by these loops while driving over them with one loop passing under the vehicle and the next loop above it. The inductive loops will create a magnetic field and when the vehicle's metal body interrupts this electromagnetic flux, an electric current is generated proportional to the size of its magnet. The number of interruptions detected over time can then be counted by an electronic counter which sends out signals to every gate as vehicles pass through them or to a computer system via an external sensor.
A vehicle detector is used in defense for security purposes, to ensure that the vehicle has appropriate clearance before it enters a secure area, and also as a part of surveillance systems.
Drive-Thru Restaurants
The drive-thru restaurant application is where a set of loops are installed on the ground and positioned to detect vehicles entering the lane from which they choose their meal at this type of eatery. The vehicle's weight will be detected by these inductive loops as it drives over them with one loop passing under the vehicle and the other over it.
On the basis of region, the global inductive loop vehicle detector market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Middle East & Africa. The North American region accounted for the largest share due to its developed infrastructure in most of the countries. In addition to this, it has a large potential market segment with more than one billion vehicles present on roadways which is not fully tapped yet.
North America is followed by Latin America, Europe, and the Asia Pacific. In the coming years, the North American region is expected to lead in terms of market share due to increasing demand for traffic management infrastructure. The market in Europe region is also projected to grow at a significant rate owing to the increasing focus on improving traffic flow and minimizing congestion.
In the coming years, the Asia Pacific region is expected to lead in terms of growth due to its rising demand for vehicles as well as infrastructure development such as expressways, roads, etc. Middle East & Africa are also expected to grow at a significant rate owing to the increasing focus on improving traffic flow and minimizing congestion.
Growth Factors
Growth factors of the global inductive loop vehicle detector market are increasing demand for parking management, the high adoption rate in various application sectors, and the need to control traffic congestion. According to a study by KPMG on transportation systems, improving sustainable transport options will be necessary through 2020 as per-capita fuel consumption is set to decrease over this period.
