Thermal Oxidizer:
The Thermal Oxidizer is a vessel with an air inlet, baffles to promote turbulent flow within the chamber, and filters for removing particulates from the effluent gas before it exits. This can be done by passing the hot gas over a bed of inert porous material such as lava rock or ceramic media. The oxidizer can be used for both oxidation and filtering pollutants but is more often used to remove particulates from the gas stream rather than break down chemicals present in it. The two types of filters are a bag filter that relies on depth loading, which means that the surface area available increases as the depth of packing material decreases, and a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, which has an extremely fine mesh.
Catalytic Oxidizer:
The Catalytic Oxidizer the simplest configuration consists of an airtight chamber with perforated walls and a catalyst. An electric or gas burner heats the interior to create hot combustion gases that flow through the exhaust system into a scrubber where particulates are removed by filtration. The air is then cooled and discharged at atmospheric, in which the chemical process is performed, or in a scrubber to remove particulates before discharge.
Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer:
The regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO), which is a variation of the catalytic oxidizer, includes an air compressor and recirculation system. The exhaust gases from a combustion process are directed to heat exchangers where they warm incoming cold fresh air. This sequence of heating followed by cooling, in turn, causes nitrogen dioxide emissions to be converted to nitrogen and oxygen.
Regenerative Catalytic Oxidizer:
A regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO) is an industrial air pollution control device that destroys organic pollutants in gaseous form by oxidation with a heated catalyst. The RTO process uses hot combustion gases to heat the incoming cold fresh air, which causes the NOx emissions to be converted to N and O during the heat exchange process. Regenerative Catalytic Oxidizers are typically used for large-scale industrial applications such as steel mills, petrochemical refineries, cement plants, chemical manufacturing facilities with ammonia production units, or sulfuric acid plants. The RCO is bifurcated into a gas and liquid phase. The process starts by heating the primary reactants of air and fuel to form an exothermic reaction with hot combustion gases.
