Shell coolers are characterized by the presence of shells that contain the gases and have tubes, fins, or plates in which these gases flow to enhance cooling. It operates on heat transfer principles such as conduction, convection, and radiation. The shell has two halves with an opening for circulation of liquids along one side-wall between them called a wet pan baffle area.
Tube:
Tube exhaust gas recirculation cooler is a type of heat exchanger used in the automotive industry. It circulates cold water through tubes to cool down the gases from an engine before it enters the atmosphere, which helps reduce pollution and save fuel. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) coolers are fitted inside or outside the vehicle's engine block depending on their size-large EGRs can be mounted externally whereas smaller ones need to be fitted internally. A tube form of this heat exchanger has a large surface area for cooling as compared to other types like plate, wing, shell, etc., hence more efficient than them with respect to lower weight.
