A disadvantage with this type of device is its inability to provide detail when examining soft tissue which may contain plaque buildup.

The process involves a dentist placing this type of device against the surface of a tooth with no preparation or coating necessary on either side and taking an intraoral photograph using special x-ray film. This will show how much light penetrates through, allowing for the visual examination which can be used to diagnose any potential cavities. Transillumination devices are also used by orthodontists when performing bracket adjustments where they use it to see if teeth have receded too far into their sockets so that brackets are not visible and cannot be adjusted. Dentists also make use of these types of devices during endodontic procedures such as root canal treatment, pulp capping, and apical surgery.
