Global Automotive Exhausts Market by Type (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), Lean Nox Trap (LNT), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)), By Application (OEMs, Aftermarket) and Region (North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Middle East & Africa), Forecast To 2028
The Global Automotive Exhausts Market size is estimated to reach USD 37.1 billion in 2028 from an estimated USD 19.2 billion in 2021, at a CAGR of 10.8% during the forecast period. The market for diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) is expected to grow at the highest rate during the forecast period among all other types of automotive exhausts mainly due to their high penetration rates across various regions globally including Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America and North America where SUVs are gaining popularity rapidly.
Automotive exhausts are a type of emissions system. It is specifically designed to reduce the emission levels from vehicles into the air by converting harmful, high-temperature engine gases into less toxic chemicals or substances that pollute the environment with lower temperatures and can be released without causing harm. An automotive exhaust system is made up of an exhaust pipe (or manifold), catalytic converter(s), and muffler. The catalyst reduces pollutants in the vehicle's effluent gas while cutting back on fuel consumption and increasing power delivery efficiency as well as reducing wear on internal combustion engines via cleaning within its own temperature range. An aftermarket product allows for increased performance because it reduces backpressure caused by pollution control devices installed upstream such as a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF).
On the basis of Types, the market is segmented into diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), diesel particulate filter (DPF), lean Nox trap (LNT), and selective catalytic reduction system (SCR).
Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC):
The diesel oxidation catalyst is a device that filters out nitrogen oxides (NOx) in exhaust gases. It converts the NOx into ozone and nitrate, which are not harmful to human health or the environment as they do not contribute to smog formation. The DOC also cleans up acid rain by removing sulfur dioxide from exhaust emissions and prevents the need for emission controls downstream of the exhaust pipeline.
Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF):
A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is one of the current technologies for reducing emissions from diesel vehicles. Similar to a catalytic converter used in petrol engines, DPFs are designed to remove soot particles and nitrogen oxides generated by burning fuel that would otherwise enter the atmosphere as exhaust fumes. Diesel Particulate Filters use an electrostatic charge to capture particulates that are then heated up and converted into a gas.
Lean Nox Trap (LNT):
A Lean Nox Trap is an emissions control device used on diesel engines in which the exhaust gas recirculates within a pipe filled with traps. The LNT removes nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the combustion process by adsorbing them onto activated charcoal, where they stay until released into the air. They are not as effective at removing particulate matter (PM) from the exhaust stream. Lean Nox traps are sometimes referred to as “Otto” or "lean" catalytic converters, but they differ in that LNTs do not require an oxidation catalyst like Otto-type converter and so have lower fuel consumption.
Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR):
A Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalytic converter is an emissions control device for diesel engines that reduces the level of nitrogen oxides. It does this by adding ammonia to the system, which converts NOx into gaseous nitrogen and water vapor. SCRs are different from diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC) because the DOC only reduces NOx. An LNT is similar to an SCR with one exception: The LNT contains no ammonia and cannot convert NOx into gaseous nitrogen and water vapor as can an SCR.
On the basis of Application, the market is segmented into OEMs and aftermarkets.
OEMs:
The use of automotive exhausts in OEMs: Automotive exhaust systems are primarily used by automobile manufacturers and suppliers. Manufacturers make cars more fuel-efficient with the help of emissions control components, while suppliers manufacture or produce these parts for vehicles to reduce their environmental impact. The increase in fuel efficiency will also help carmakers to fulfill their environmental responsibility obligations. In the future, there will be an increasing trend in the use of exhaust systems owing to stringent environmental regulations.
Aftermarkets:
The use of automotive exhausts in Aftermarkets: The aftermarket includes any person or organization, other than the manufacturer and its subsidiaries, engaged in providing services to existing owners of vehicles. Automotive exhaust systems are widely used by this market as they can be easily fitted to cars purchased from an OEM.
On the basis of Region, the market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Middle East & Africa. The North American region is the largest market for automotive exhausts owing to stringent emission regulations in this area. The Middle East and Africa region are anticipated to have a high CAGR during the forecast period owing to the growing automotive industry in this region. The growth can be attributed to various factors such as increasing the purchasing power of consumers, standardization of emission regulations, focus on development by key players, etc.
Growth Factors For The Automotive Exhausts Market:
The growth of the market can be attributed to various factors such as increasing the purchasing power of consumers, standardization of emission regulations, focus on development by key players, etc. The Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) segment dominated the market with more than 76% share in 2018 and is expected to maintain its dominance during the forecast period. North America dominated the market, accounting for more than 44% share in 20, and is projected to maintain its dominance during the forecast period.
