There are many different types of Total Knee Arthroplasties that can be performed, depending on what type of surgery was done before (e.g., total vs partial), how severe the symptoms are now, and exactly where you're experiencing pain. The most common Total Knee Arthroplasty procedures involve removing all parts of an arthritic knee joint that no longer provide stability for weight-bearing. It involves replacing the knee joint with an artificial component.

Fixed-Bearing Implants:

Fixed-bearing implants are surgically implanted components that have a ball and socket type joint. The femur (thigh bone) is fitted with an implant that has two parts: the cup, which fits into the hollowed-out section of the knee end of your thighbone or femur; and a metal stem extending from it to fit into your leg shaft. Other fixed-bearing implants may also include a round metal base plate used for fixation on one side of the knee joint or both sides if required.

The goal in all types of total knee arthroplasty surgery is to restore stability while restoring function during walking, standing up, and climbing stairs as well as cutting down pain levels associated with arthritis, bursitis inflammation, or other knees joint degeneration.

 

Mobile-Bearing Implants:

Mobile-bearing implants are designed to enable the joint to have a more natural motion. They do not offer as much stability as the fixed-bearing types of implants, but they can reduce pain and swelling after surgery.

The mobile bearings will wear out over time requiring them to be replaced every few years or so, depending on how often you use your knee for activities like running and biking. These types of implants also may require revision surgeries in order to address loosening problems that can occur with repeated stress from physical activity. Mobile bearing knee replacement is used mostly for people who want an artificial knee that provides less stiffness than other options such as total hip arthroplasty (sometimes called Total Hip Replacement) or Total Knee Arthroplasty.
