A soil binder is a substance that binds the water molecules with the soil particles. This increases the stability of the soil, which helps in reducing erosion and compaction. The binding agents mainly used are clays, organic matter (and their decomposition products), calcium carbonate, aluminum silicates. Soil binding agents (or additives) can be liquid or solid in nature depending on their intended application.

A liquid additive is generally applied at low concentrations using specialized spraying equipment; while dry material additives may require only simple mechanical mixing with existing soils prior to compaction for site restoration applications, they may need additional treatment after placement when used for road construction purposes. Solid materials include asphalt emulsions and pneumatic limestone concretes. Soil binding agents are generally applied in dry form to achieve their desired purposes. Liquid binders, however, may be used for specialized applications such as injection of soil stabilizers into a specific area or creating an impermeable barrier with asphalt emulsions.

Chemical Binders:

Chemical binders are the chemicals that help in binding soil together and at times also act as a pesticide. The main chemical elements include aluminum, calcium carbonate, and magnesium oxide. Chemical binders help in binding soil particles together to maintain structural stability. They are applied on the top of fresh soil, after compaction, and before laying the foundation wall. These chemical binders can be reactive or non-reactive.



Physical Binders:

Physical binders are non-chemical soil stabilizers that enhance the mechanical properties of soils. They include polymer products such as asphalt emulsions and bituminous-based soil stabilization material (STM). Physical binders are not soluble in water. They generally have high stiffness and low strength properties, good resistance to abrasion, impact, and creep. Some of the physical binder types include: Cement-based materials such as fly ash, slag cement, etc. Limestone is a type of natural mineral that can be used for soil stabilization with the addition of little or no chemical additives which help them resist degradation from chemicals in general soils.

It also provides resistance against root penetration during the cultivation process leading to better crop yield at higher density with less plant mortality rate due to transplantation shock.




Soil binders are used for various construction purposes, such as subfloor preparation and finishing, maintenance of roads and runways. Soil binder can be applied in Geotechnical engineering where the soil has less shear strength or become weak due to water erosion, dissolution, or leaching out of its constituents like clay particles by rainwater, etc. The binding agent is able to increase the wet-strength (moisture content) of a given volume of the dry mix below its initial workability limit thereby increasing cohesion within that mixture, making it more difficult to break apart with tamping tools during placement operations; this allows improved compaction densities without excessive energy inputs such as those required when using conventional steel drum rollers.
