The Global Ship Fender Market size is expected to reach USD 1.5 billion by 2028, rising at a CAGR of 5% during the forecast period from 2021-2028. The market has been witnessing significant growth in recent years due to various factors, such as increasing demand for marine cargo transportation across the world and an increasing number of offshore oil rigs exploration activities.
Ship Fenders are used for protecting and providing cushioning for ships in ports or docks against other vessels, wharves, etc. It is basically a piece of heavy equipment that absorbs the energy from an impact by dissipating it over a large surface area instead of transmitting all of the force to one point in contact with the vessel - such as bumpers on pier heads or docks when boats are not moored alongside. Ship fenders can also be used as protective items preventing ship-to-ship collisions at sea.
On the basis of Types, the market is segmented into Solid Rubber, Pneumatic Foam, and Other.
Solid rubber ship fenders are made of solid, high-density rubbers that provide cushioning and protection for ships. They absorb the energy from an impact by dissipating it over a large surface area instead of transmitting all of the force to one point in contact with the vessel. Solid rubber ship fenders can be used as bumpers on pier heads or docks when a boat is not moored alongside.
In broad terms, there are two types of solid rubber ship fender - (i) Non-compressed Type; and (ii) Compressed Type: The compressed type has a higher density than the non-compressed type which provides better resistance against abrasion caused by hull & propeller fouling, etc. while providing lower resistance to impact.
Pneumatic Foam Fender is composed primarily of expanded polystyrene, with a small amount of oil added to keep it from sticking together too much when inflated. They have a large buoyancy and are capable of absorbing high impact. They can be used in the place of solid rubber or other types of foam for vessels that require good shock absorption as well as abrasion resistance.
On the basis of Application, the market is segmented into Ship, Yacht, and Other. The use of ship fenders in yachts is limited. However, a few yachts may have one for their safety and protection against collisions with other vessels. These are usually made out of solid rubber or foam, which prevents any damage to the vessel’s hull. Solid rubber fenders can also be used when berthing alongside another vessel at pier facilities where ships need to protect themselves from an underwater collision with either fixed objects such as piers or other floating objects like barges etc., these types of marine aids are known as mooring lines, buoys and anchors respectively.
On the basis of Region, the market is segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Middle East & Africa. The Asia-Pacific region dominates this industry owing to a rise in construction activities, such as ports & offshore facilities on coastal regions that require the use of ship fenders. Driven by strong economic growth, emerging economies are expected to adopt higher standards of living with increased purchasing power; which consequently drives up demand for luxury yachts worldwide.
Growing demand for ship and yacht construction, owing to the rise in global trade as a result of low oil prices. In order to increase efficiency and reduce wastage, there is an increasing focus on lowering fuel costs by using lighter structures with less friction than before which requires more efficient ships. This will consequently lead to increased production rates, thereby boosting industrial output globally
Increasing investment towards research and development activities for better safety features in maritime transportation (i.e., incorporating fenders or berths). The increasing commercialization of ports leads to wider use of marine vessels that are prone to accidents; thus it becomes important for governments/companies spending large amounts on infrastructure projects related to sea transport such as Dubai Ports World and China Merchants Group to ensure the safety of vessels and people.
