Centrifugal Pumps:

Centrifugal Pumps type is the most commonly used pump as they are simple, economical, and durable. They can be installed in relatively smaller spaces with low head height requirements. Centrifugal pumps are used for handling corrosive fluids and slurries. They can handle materials with a high solid concentration of up to 20%. Centrifugal pumps are the most widely used type of sanitary pump. A centrifugal pump uses a rotating impeller to increase pressure and displace fluid through an outlet, which is usually provided by a volute casing that spirals around the drive shaft. The resulting velocity at the outlet port combines with suction created by flow entering axially at inlet ports to draw liquid into volutes or other passages where it can be further accelerated if necessary before being discharged by one or more outlets situated typically on opposite sides of the housing. The direction of flow within such a pump may be reversed by switching the connection to opposite inlet and outlet ports. There are many types of centrifugal pumps: Axial Flow, Mixed Flow (or Radial), Submersible, Deep Well, and External Centrifugal Pumps.



Positive Displacement Pumps:

Positive displacement pumps are the type that has no impeller. These sanitary pumps have a turbine fluid flow path with one-way shut-off valves at both inlet and outlet ports to prevent backflow. The pump is driven by an externally rotating drive shaft or motor, resulting in constant flows that can be easily maintained when necessary. The positive displacement pumps are used when the process requires large flows or high pressures. The pump works by converting mechanical energy into pressure and flow energy via direct contact with moving parts of varying shapes, sizes, configurations, etc. It is similar to a hydraulic cylinder in function but typically not connected directly to a prime mover like an electric motor/engine which could be changed without any changes in the piping arrangement between the source of power supply and line system. Positive displacement pumps are mainly preferred for pumping liquids that have significant solids or debris content in them. These include dirty water containing sand, dirt, rocks, etc., the food industry which requires pumping of cream/milk products having chunks of fruits & vegetables among others.



Specialty Pumps:

Specialty pumps are used for handling viscous fluids. These types of pumps come with a large number of impeller designs that can be adjusted to handle different viscosities and flow rates. Some common examples include: centrifugal, positive displacement, and magnetic drive sanitary pumps. Specialty pumps are used in applications where there is a need to pump viscous fluid at low flow rates while maintaining zero discharge pressure along with a high viscosity level under normal operating conditions.
