The Global Non-Destructive Testing Market size is projected to reach USD X, XXX.X million by 2028 from an estimated USD 3,937.6 million in 2021, registering a CAGR of 10.1% during the forecast period from 2021-2028.
Nondestructive testing is a technique that is used to assess the physical properties of any material without damaging it in order to determine its suitability for use. Simply put, it means looking inside an object without destroying the object. This can be done in order to find out any defects or faults that may affect the performance of objects later. The main reason for this kind of inspection is to ensure safety and reliability at all times when manufacturing items such as parts, tools, machine components, etc. Furthermore, these tests help assess product quality during production before deployment in applications where human lives are involved. NDT methods vary depending on what type of materials they’re used on but generally involve using electromagnetic waves (such as ultrasonic), radiations (X-ray/Gamma-ray), or particles (electromagnetic particle).
On the basis of Type, the global non-destructive testing market is segmented into Eddy Current Inspection (ECI), Magnetic Particle (MPI), Electromagnetic Testing (ET), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT/MT/UT), and Ultrasonic testing.
Eddy Current Inspection (ECI) is a non-destructive testing method for the detection of surface and sub-surface flaws in metal parts. The inspection involves passing an alternating magnetic field through the part, inducing eddy currents within any discontinuities which attenuate the signal to generate contrast between defect and sound material. Eddy current inspection (ECI) is a widely used technique for testing metal thickness, coating, and the workpiece surface. It can be applied in engineering applications such as welding quality control and product manufacturing process improvement to ensure optimum end-product performance.
Magnetic particle testing (MPI) is a non-destructive inspection method in which the part to be tested, or workpiece, is magnetized and demagnetized with a magnetic field. The resulting pattern on the surface of the workpiece will vary according to any defects that are present at various points throughout its structure. The MPI process can be used to inspect ferromagnetic materials, primarily steel. The advantage is that there are no external magnetic fields to interfere with the inspection, and it is fast enough to inspect large parts rapidly.
In the electromagnetic testing method, a part under test is excited with an alternating magnetic field and then subjected to measurement of its response. It can be done by either varying the current or frequency. ET uses electromagnetic fields to detect material discontinuities in ferromagnetic components. The main advantage of this method over others is that it provides great accuracy in measurements as no physical contact between parts needs to be made for inspection.
Liquid Penetrant Inspection (PT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), and Ultrasonic Testing are the three types of Liquid Penetrant testing. It is used to detect surface-breaking flaws in non-porous materials such as plastics, ceramics, metals, etc. The liquid penetrant may be applied by brushing or spray technique depending on the material type being tested. After application, it will flow into any opening present in the test piece to determine if there are cracks/fissures containing metal particles that were not removed during the manufacture or assembly process.
Ultrasonic testing is a non-destructive testing process in which the material under test is scanned with ultrasonic waves. Ultrasound, when applied to materials such as metals, ceramics, and composites, can detect internal flaws or changes in geometry without damaging the surface of the item being tested. The advantages include: - Can inspect large and irregular surfaces. - Very efficient in detecting flaws like cracks, pits, and other defects on the surface of a part or product which cannot be detected by any other method.
On the basis of Application, the global non-destructive testing market is segmented into Aerospace, Defense, Automotive, and Oil & Gas.
On the basis of Region, the global non-destructive testing market is segmented into North America; Europe; Asia Pacific; Latin America; Middle East & Africa. North America held the largest share in 2017 that accounted for nearly 24% of total market revenue globally owing primarily to advanced infrastructure that spurs growth opportunities across this region. Among all regions, Asia Pacific is expected to witness the highest growth rate of more than 20% during the forecast period. This can be attributed to a rapid increase in demand for automotive and infrastructure sectors across countries such as India, China, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand among others. Europe holds the second-largest segment share in 2017 owing to advanced technology adoption for various applications including power generation, aerospace, automotive, infrastructure development, etc., coupled with stringent government regulations related to safety standards are anticipated to further drive the non-destructive testing market across this region. Middle East regions are also anticipated to showcase significant gains over the next few years on account of increasing oil exploration activities across various countries namely UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Iran.
The growth in this market can be attributed to factors such as an increase in demand for oil and gas exploration activities worldwide owing to natural resource scarcity coupled with increasing demand for renewable energy sources, rise in construction activities across various industries, and stringent environmental regulations & standards imposed by government bodies.
The growing demand for NDT is expected to drive the global non-destructive testing market. Owing to rise in manufacturing activities, especially in emerging economies of the Asia Pacific and Latin America region is further pushing the growth of this market. Furthermore, the increase in the adoption of new technologies such as wireless & internet technology is also contributing towards boosting up the industry's growth on a positive note over upcoming years.
