The Global Maritime Fenders Market size is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.74% and reach $X.X billion by 2028, from $1.7 billion in 2016. Increasing frequency and severity of accidental or unplanned occurrences such as vessel groundings and collisions have led to higher demand for marine protection equipment such as fenders that protect vessels from any possible impacts with the structures alongside the berth, quay, pier, etc., which was not required earlier because those structures were made mainly of steel or concrete now these structures are also made up of fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) composites that may break down under impact load and cause damage to the vessel's hulls & propellers.
Maritime fenders are the devices used to protect cargo vessels, oil rigs, and other marine structures against collision or damage. Maritime Fender can also be known as fenders which provide cushioning between two floating objects that tend to collide with each other following contact of waves (or even if they move too close). They typically consist of a resilient material sandwiched between two rigid materials like rubber or plastic. Their main function is protection but it also helps in maintaining stability by absorbing energy when there is an impact due to wave action.
There are many features of maritime fenders. Maritime fenders generally have a cylindrical shape, which is able to reduce the risk of boats hitting against docks or piers during berthing operations. They can be made from various materials such as rubber and foam. The most commonly used material for manufacturing maritime fenders is rubber due to its flexibility and ease in use along with a high-quality performance at low costs compared to other widely available options like aluminum alloy that is widely inexpensive but not capable enough when it comes to containing impacts they receive on dock surfaces.
On the basis of Type, the global maritime fenders market is segmented into Solid Rubber Fenders, Pneumatic Fenders, Foam fenders, and Others.
Solid Rubber Fenders are the most expensive type of maritime fenders available in the global market. These durable, high-performance and flexible fenders can be used to protect vessels from damage during docking or undocking operations. Solid rubber fenders come with excellent puncture resistance properties, which is why they are widely preferred by various ports for their berths. The Solid Rubber Fenders are used to protect a vessel from damage, e.g., during berthing or while mooring in the port. The space between the fender and the wall is filled with air which can be compressed if required by applying an external load on it such as large ships at berth. This type of maritime fender is available in circular or rectangular shapes.
Pneumatic fenders are inflated with air and used in ships to absorb the shock of a vessel when it is moored or docking. This type of maritime fender absorbs more than 90% of energy and reduces both damage and time involved in dockings, making them extremely popular for many ports around the world. They can also be found at offshore oil rigs to provide a cushion between the hull and structure during docking operations while minimizing damage to both parts.
Pneumatic fenders are composed of a gas chamber that contains air or nitrogen, enclosed by an outer rubber membrane. Pneumatic marine fenders offer superior protection against damage caused to the ship and pier during berthing because they deform in response to load without permanently deforming like solid rubber pneumatic fender units (SRPU) do. This allows the fender to absorb shocks while minimizing damage to other shipboard structures or equipment, which can be especially useful in ports with expensive navigational systems and dockside equipment.
Foam fenders are made from closed-cell foam that is resilient and has good buoyancy. They provide excellent cushioning for effective shock load protection, dampening sound levels, and preventing wear of the vessel’s hull against the dock wall. The solid material used in these types is polystyrene or expanded closed-cell cross-linked polyethylene (ECP). Foam marine fenders have developed over the last decade and they are replacing rubber because of their cost-effectiveness, durability, availability, and performance.
On the basis of Application, the global maritime fenders market is segmented into Ports & Docks, and Other Applications.
On the basis of Region, the global maritime fenders market is segmented into North America (U.S., Canada), Latin America (Brazil), Europe (France, Italy Germany), Asia Pacific excluding Japan(China India, South Korea), and Middle East & Africa (GCC Countries, North Africa). The maritime fenders market in Latin America is expected to grow at a high rate during the forecast period. Along with this, the growing demand for port and dock infrastructure across South American countries such as Brazil and Argentina will drive industry growth in the coming years. The Asia Pacific maritime fenders market is expected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period. The key factors contributing to this growth are growing trade volumes in developing countries such as China, India, and Japan, etc., increasing demand for logistics & transportation services by large-scale manufacturing companies due to an expanding production capacity of high volume output products domestically available for exports, increased focus on port infrastructure development along with a significant improvement in living standards across emerging economies in APAC region especially India, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The maritime fenders market in Middle East & Africa is expected to grow at a modest rate from 2021-2028.
The global maritime fenders are likely to grow over the forecast period owing to rapid industrialization and the high demand for new ships. Moreover, the growing need for protecting harbors from environmental pollution is expected to generate significant growth in market size. In the next five years, Asia Pacific is expected to have a relatively higher demand for fenders as compared with other regions. China and India are some of the emerging markets that would require protection from accidental collisions & groundings between vessels anchored in their waters that will fuel the market growth during this period.
