Magnesium can be found as either magnesium oxide (MgO), which exhibits behavior similar to that of a metal when it undergoes oxidation; or as magnesite (magnesium carbonate MgCO₃). These two minerals are not always differentiable by their appearance; they often have very similar physical qualities such as color, luster, hardness, etc.; moreover, some deposits lack sufficient quantities of one to make commercial extraction feasible.

Magnesite

Magnesite is a magnesium carbonate mineral. It typically occurs as an evaporite, formed by the heat and pressure of overlying sedimentary rock formations - with veins in sandstone often forming from such decomposition processes. The formation process creates thick white seams that can be mined for their raw materials, used to produce cement or magnesia (a type of paint).

It's usually found around geological faults because it forms when rocks are compressed due to tectonic forces which lead to increased temperature and lower pressure; this causes water-soluble minerals like calcite or dolomite within the fault zone to dissolve into solution while insoluble ones like clay, quartz, feldspar, and mica remain behind. If the fault moves, the solution will be able to rise and form a vein.

Dolomite

Dolomite is a sedimentary carbonate mineral that usually occurs in the form of white, gray, or pink limestone. It can be found all over the world and has been mined since ancient times for use as an energy source. Dolomite is a rock that consists of an equal mix of magnesium and calcium carbonate. It can be found throughout the world. Dolomite is magnesium carbonate that contains more than two parts of magnesium for every one part of oxygen.

Sand Casting

Magnesium magnesite and dolomite are used in sand casting to a lesser extent than the other two magnesium compounds listed above.
