As current flows through the coils they produce magnetic fields and these interact with complementary magnetized regions in the linear motor to push or pull its surfaces in one direction along their length, producing motion linearly between two endpoints which rely on only friction for stops.

Linear electric motors can be used in a wide range of applications but are most commonly found in small devices such as the propellant actuator unit (PAU) for ejecting disc drives from laptop computers. They are also employed to spin computer disk platters and drive belt-driven equipment, including printing presses. Worldwide demand for linear electric motors has increased significantly due to growing industrialization and modernization across different regions globally.

 

On the basis of Type, the market is segmented into Cylindrical Type, U-shaped Slot Type, and Flat Plate Type. The cylindrical type dominated the global market in 2018 with a share of more than 50%.

 

Cylindrical Type:

Linear motors are categorized by the type of magnetic field, and electric motor systems with cylindrical-type magnets have been traditionally used in applications including punch press machines. Linear electric motors that use a helical rotor winding typically require an air gap between stator and rotor; this design may be more difficult to manufacture but is able to operate without any lubrication because there is no contact between components.

 

U-shaped Slot Type:

The U-shaped Slot Type Linear Electric Motors are the smallest type of linear electric motors. They typically have a form factor comparable to that of an axial lead-acid battery and weigh about as much. The stator is constructed from one or more thin metal sheets, which are meshed together with poles cut out on either side for coils in each slot formed by two commutator segments. These types of motors excel at high speeds up to 150,000 rpm (150KHz) because there is no overlap between slots where brushes would need to be located - these reduced number of moving parts leads to higher reliability and longer service life than any other type of motor. One downside is they produce less torque per size unit compared to cylindrical type.

 

Flat Plate Type:

Flat Plate Type motors are the most popular type of linear electric motor used in production lines. Compared to other types, these motors have better torque and higher weight load capacity for their size. These qualities make them ideal for use in fixtures where a lot of heavy-duty work is needed such as punching or die casting machines.

Drying Machines:

The linear electric motors in drying machines are predominantly of Flat Plate Type. These motors use a flat disk as the rotor which is set within an open-sided shell to allow airflow past it more easily, resulting in higher torque and lower power consumption. The motor can be used for both low and high-temperature applications (15 - 65°C). Drying machine manufacturers usually offer different models with varying stroke lengths so that they can be adapted to customer needs better.

 

Office Equipment:

Linear Electric Motors have been found to work well on office equipment such as moving tables or feeding paper into photocopying machines due to their durability, reliability, lightweight design, and efficiency over the rotary type.

Devices that are not mentioned in the other two categories can also utilize linear electric motors. This includes blowers and vacuum cleaners, as well as agricultural equipment such as weed-eaters or hedge cutters.
