In contrast with most other types of orthopedic surgical procedures plastics are not generally associated with bone ingrowth in order to improve fixation strength over time and therefore necessitate supplementary stabilization techniques like pinning at other sites on the bone surface surrounding the implant, or by the implantation of bone screws.

Fiber knee reconstruction materials are also composite materials, but they have a high content of natural polymers and do not require any additional fixation techniques for stabilization. Natural fibers such as silk can be processed into medical fabrics that closely resemble human tissues in terms of their physical properties (such as elasticity) and biological functionality (such as osteoinductive potential). They have been shown to stimulate bone ingrowth with time at rates comparable to bone ingrowth after regular arthroplasty procedures using other types of knee replacement materials like metal implants or cemented prostheses. Thereby fiber-reinforced plastics could offer attractive alternatives for patients with osteoporosis.
