Icodextrin may increase glucose availability, but it does not stimulate endogenous insulin secretion or affect the hepatic metabolism of exogenous substrates at normal physiologic concentrations. ) It has no toxic effects on kidney function and can be given by mouth or intravenously followed by oral administration after its biological half-life demonstrated that it had a duration of action equal to about three hours when administered orally. The intended effect is an improvement in glycemic control without entailing any risk of hypoglycemia if blood glucose levels are properly monitored during treatment with iCodextrin.

Icodextrin is a glucose polymer consisting of amylopectin and dextrins. It helps to control blood sugar levels in the body, as it slows down carbohydrate absorption. The procedure of use Icodextrin in Automatic Peritoneal Dialysis (APD) includes insertion into a catheter which is attached to an infusion port; installation after irrigation with dialysate from bag or container through tubing connected to the patient's peritoneum for continuous drainage out fluid retention from the abdomen via gravity flow system during APD treatment.
