They are more resistant to degradation by contact with alkaline solutions than prior art membranes such as PTFE (Teflon). Carbon paper type HFDLs consist of two sheets: one sheet has carbon glue spread over it uniformly while the other contains filled with catalyst particles like Pt, Pd, and Rh.

 

 

Carbon Cloth Type:

The carbon cloth type of the hydrogen fuel cell gas diffusion layer is a flat structure that contains small holes. It can be made from many types of materials, such as titanium and metal alloys to aluminum or stainless steel. The size also varies depending on the material used in its manufacturing process. Carbon cloth type HFDLs are composed of a single sheet with graphene oxide sheets intertwined to form a carbon nanotube structure with pores ranging from 0.01 µm to 50 µm depending on the application. It is used to make the hydrogen fuel cell gas diffusion layer thinner and lighter.
