The main applications include Detection of hot rolling mill bars that have been displaced from the bar alley by a broken end-bar detector; Stopping a furnace to prohibit smelting when molten material is found on the sidewalls where scrap iron has fallen over onto the operating floor; Detecting spalled slag at plate mill standpipe openings before it enters into downstream equipment such as a converter ladle car inside an ingot melter.

Remote Hot Metal Detectors:

Remote Hot Metal Detectors are devices that detect hot steel before it reaches a rolling mill, bar mill, or rod mill. This helps prevent the risk of accidents and reduces production time by allowing mills to operate without stopping for safety procedures. The following are some advantages of remote detectors:

  • They reduce risks by detecting metals at an earlier stage in the processing cycle than traditional safety measures;
  • They increase productivity because there is no need for grinding down the milling machine when one becomes stuck due to hot metal detection;

Fixed Hot Metal Detectors:

Fixed Hot Metal Detectors are devices that detect the metal content in a material before it enters into heat treatment. The device is made up of two electrodes that send pulses through an electric current and watch for changes in voltage as metals pass between them. Fixed HMDS are typically used to test steel, aluminum, or other alloys with high conductivity levels to ensure they do not exceed process limits set by safety regulations such as NFPA 70E and ANSI Z49 standards.

The following equipment is required: computer interface unit (CU), transducer hardware (TD) including head electrode assembly - which includes TD electronics module, cable connector kit, air pump & adapter tube kits; coaxial cables with BNC connectors.

 

Scanning Hot Metal Detectors:

Scanning Hot Metal detectors are the most advanced type of HMDs. They use a rotating magnetic field to generate currents in metal objects that pass through them and then measure changes in the strength of these currents over time. The scanning process automatically detects, singles out, and classifies ferromagnetic material from other non-ferromagnetic materials such as aluminum or copper alloys which cannot be detected by traditional HMD technologies. This scanning technology provides good performance for detecting hot steel products with various shapes like wire rods, sheet metal, etc., especially when they move fast at high speed (such as rolling mill).

Rod Mill:

A rod mill is a type of grinding machine used to reduce the size and shape of raw material. Hot metal detectors are installed between two sets of rollers, which causes them to be rotated in opposite directions. The rolls grind together and simultaneously rotate at different speeds, resulting in an even distribution within the roll gap (space where the roller meets).

Hot metal detectors maintain this separation by detecting any hot spots that form while materials pass through and shut off power if too much heat builds up on one side or another. They also monitor for contamination from other sources such as overflow from scrap bins, floor-sweeping, or dust build-up around the detector itself.

 

Bar Mill:

The use of HMDs in Bar Mill is to detect the presence of hot steel, and as such, they are used primarily for safety purposes. This is because an excessive amount or absence of heat can be a precursor to a dangerous situation developing. In this way, HMDs have been designed specifically with safety in mind ever since their first conception during World War II.

 

Rolling Mill:

A rolling mill is a manufacturing unit that takes heavy metal and rolls it through dies to make sheets of steel. The hot metal detectors are used in the process to detect foreign particles, or contaminants, which can cause damage if not removed from the sheet before it reaches its final destination.

 

Plate Mill:

Hot metal detectors are used in plate mill production lines to detect the presence of hot steel. The device is mounted on a stand and has an arm that extends over the rollers or tracks where raw materials are distributed, ensuring they do not contain too much heat before being processed by other equipment. This early detector can prevent molten liquid from falling into cold space as well as keep it away from electrical hazards.

 

Other Steel Mills:

A number of steel mills other than those mentioned in the table are also using hot metal detectors. These include integrated steel plants, raw material processing, and recycling facilities among others.
