Heart implants are devices used to treat the heart, usually as a result of an illness or accident. The implant can have different functions such as treating arrhythmia, managing irregular heartbeats, and improving blood flow by helping prevent clots from forming in coronary arteries after angioplasty surgery. These devices may be implanted directly into the patient's heart during open-heart surgery or they can be inserted through a tube that is passed from another artery (less invasive).

Heart implants are used to treat a variety of heart conditions including Arrhythmias, Myocardial Ischemia, Acute Myocardial Infarction, and Congestive Heart Failure. The implant can be made with different materials such as metal or plastic that is either self-expanding or balloon expanded due to the body heat.

Cardiac Rhythm Management Devices:

Cardiac Rhythm Management Devices are heart implants that help to maintain a regular heartbeat. These devices work as pacemakers, and the implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) arranges electrical pulses to regulate your heart rate when necessary. Cardiac Rhythm Management Devices can be used in people with heart problems, such as arrhythmias or congestive heart failure.

There are three types of Cardiac Rhythm Management Devices: pacemakers; implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs); and cardiac assist devices.

Pacemakers regulate the heartbeat to treat slow rhythms, which is caused by a problem with the electrical system that controls it. ICDs work similarly but also continuously monitor for irregular patterns known as “arrhythmias” and deliver shocks when required to reset the rhythm back into normal sinus beats. Coronary stent devices help improve blood flow by holding open narrowed arteries after a procedure called angioplasty.

Cardiac assist devices are used to help a weakened heart pump blood effectively and include left ventricular assists, centrifugal pumps, right ventricle support pumps, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

 

Coronary Stent Devices:

A coronary stent is a tube-shaped medical device implanted in the blood vessels of the heart to keep them open. It can be used for example, when there’s been a blockage or narrowing caused by hard plaques inside the arteries. A cardiologist will either measure your artery and then decide on which size stent you need or they may use an imaging procedure (like angiography) that allows them to see if you have narrowed areas of your blood vessel before deciding what type of treatment might be required. Stents come in different sizes depending on how big it needs to fit into the opening – from small ones for babies up to large ones that are fitted onto adults.

 

Prosthetic Heart Valves:

There are valves that keep the blood flowing in one direction so that it does not backflow. The heart has four valves - two atria and two ventricles: Aortic Valve, Pulmonary Valve, Mitral valve or Bicuspid valve, Tricuspid valve, and Semilunar Valves. In case of a prosthetic valvular disease to be treated surgically, these may involve an artificial replacement device such as a mechanical (bioprosthesis) or biological (homograft) heart valve. This is usually done when there is no other alternative because of risk factors for surgical complications.

 

Cardiac Assist Devices:

Cardiac Assist Devices are mechanical pumps used to provide circulatory support for the heart, in the case of a person with cardiogenic shock or congestive heart failure. These devices can be external, such as an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), or implanted inside the body like a left ventricular assist device (LVAD). LVADs have been approved by FDA to help bridge patients until they receive donor's hearts and transplantation is possible. The implantable LVAD has two components: one that sits on top of your beating heart and another part below your rib cage called the power source unit which houses batteries and electronics.
