The Global Gas and Oil Pipeline Leak Detector Market size is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.3% over the forecast period, 2021-2028. The market is driven by factors such as increased awareness about environmental hazards related to gas pipeline leaks, rising number of gas explosions due to undetected leakage in pipelines which leads to huge financial losses for pipeline operators and government agencies across the world.
Gas and Oil Pipeline Leak Detector are a type of industrial equipment that is used to detect gas leaks on pipelines. The leakage can occur due to natural disasters, faulty construction methods, or other human-made hazards like corrosion. There have been many incidents where uncontrolled spills from an offshore drilling rig led to massive destruction in the surrounding area. Leak detection devices have helped prevent such accidents by continuously monitoring for possible threats and initiating corrective action before too much damage has occurred. They also help reduce pollution as well as eliminate health risks for both workers and people living near the incident site.
On the basis of Type, the market is segmented Mass-Volume Balance Method, Acoustic/Ultrasonic Sensing, Fiber Optics, Vapor Sensing.
This method is based on the principle that gas molecules pass through a boundary layer surrounding the pipeline and have different rates of flow. The mass difference between inside and outside will force this pressure gradient to change, producing detectable changes in both static pressures at fixed points along the line as well as dynamic variations in these pressures due to fluid flows. The main disadvantage with this technique is its high sensitivity to contamination from oil vapors found near underground pipelines so it must be used when there are no other sources of interference present or during periods when they can be minimized.
This method works by sending an acoustic signal into pipes where leaks occur followed by analyzing for any reflected signals using specialized equipment like hydrophones. This technique is relatively new and has not been widely used in the past as it was expensive to manufacture sensors but its usage is now being considered for a wide variety of pipelines including those that are buried or underwater.
The main disadvantage with this technique is its high sensitivity to contamination from oil vapors found near underground pipelines so it must be used when there are no other sources of interference present or during periods when they can be minimized.
Fiber optics are threaded cables of glass or plastic that transmit light, and can also be used to detect leaks. Some types of fiber optic leak detectors use a laser sensor on the floor to send pulses along the line in both directions. The difference in time for these two returns indicates when there's been even a tiny break in the cable. Fiber-optic systems have good sensitivity because they measure very small changes in optical power due to gas within one meter (about three feet) away from them at atmospheric pressure.
Similar technology as Acoustic/Ultrasonic, fiber optics work on light waves rather than soundwaves and waves. One of the main advantages of this technique is its ability to detect leaks in pipes even when they are underwater, and so it can be an alternative for offshore pipelines that use Acoustic/Ultrasonic technologies that cannot work underwater.
The vapor sensing method detects leaks by analyzing the amount of gas found near a pipeline leak site as well as some types of liquid gases like methane, ethane, and propane before being compared against ambient air readings from nearby sensors measuring background levels.
On the basis of Application, the market is segmented into Onshore and Offshore. Onshore application dominated the global pipeline leak detector market with over 50%. Offshore applications accounted for less than 40 % share owing to fewer number exploration projects that require leak detection systems as compared to onshore applications.
On the basis of Region, the market is segmented, the market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Middle East & Africa. The North American market is expected to dominate the global gas and oil pipeline leak detector market due to the large number of natural gas pipelines present in this region. Similarly, the Middle East & Africa region is set for significant growth with anticipated high investments being made by major players in the near future. The Asia Pacific region also has huge potential owing to an increase in demand from countries such as China and India for energy consumption.
The European market is also expected to witness significant growth in the gas and oil pipeline leak detector market. The country with the most natural gas pipelines, Russia, is one of the main driving forces for this particular region's development prospects. Similarly, Middle East & Africa are set for an increase in demand from countries such as Egypt which has not yet taken any major measures towards developing its energy sector infrastructure.
Latin America Market is currently witnessing low investments being made due to high levels of competition between existing players who operate on highly fragmented markets that are plagued by illegal entry barriers.
