This imaging modality uses a radioactive isotope produced by a radioisotope generator to produce gamma rays that are used in the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disease. The most common use is for nodules, which can be seen on routine scans; this helps determine if they represent cysts or cancerous growths (if malignant). A common example of this is the use of iodine-131 to image metastasic and non-metastatic thyroid cancer.

 

 

Molecular Breast Imaging:

A gamma camera is used in Molecular Breast Imaging to produce an image of the human body, which helps doctors determine whether a tumor is malignant or benign. A radioactive tracer dye called Tc-99m sulfur colloid emits positrons when it decays and this radiation can be detected by using a Gamma Camera. The data collected from these images will help specialists decide on the next course of treatment for women with breast cancer.

 

 

Kidney Scanning:

Gamma camera is used in Kidney scanning to scan the kidneys. It helps in detecting and determining any anomalies present within these organs, for example, A gamma imaging test measures how well blood flow travels through each individual kidney when injected with a radioactive tracer such as Tc99m-MAG three. The gamma radiation images are captured on film after an hour so that it shows exactly where blood flows best through your two kidneys. This way proper diagnosis of this disease can be made easily by doctors using Gamma Camera technology.
