The Global Film Resistors Market size is projected to grow at a CAGR of 3.6% during the forecast period from 2021 to 2028. The major factor driving this growth is the growing adoption of resistors in various applications such as consumer electronics, telecommunications, automotive/energy, and industrial/medical sectors.
Film resistors are components that are used in electrical circuits to control the flow of electricity. They can act as a voltage divider or be part of an impedance matching circuit. The size and length of the film resistor depend on the desired resistance value, power rating, and intended use for these types of products. Film resistors come in different shapes such as round, oval-shaped, square (rectangular), diamond-shaped or rectangular with mounting holes around one side edge. Carbon composition is a type of resistor that has carbon particles embedded into ceramic substrate material and it resists high currents well but not low ones, because they heat up too quickly near their surface area when there are excessive current flowing through them so thin-film resistors, have been developed to replace carbon-composition resistors for low power applications.
On the basis of Type, the global film resistors market is segmented into Metal Film Resistor, Metal Oxide Film Resistor, Thin Film Resistors (TTR), Thick Film Resistors (TFR), and Carbon Composition Resistors.
Metal film resistors are made of a thin layer of metal. It is not possible to produce an ideal resistor by simply combining more resistance and less conductivity together because if you put too much material in between the two metals, electrical current would be prevented from flowing through them at all. Metal Film Resistors have great advantages over other types of resistor, such as they require no lubrication which means that there’s no chance for corrosion or oxidation to form and block the flow of electricity; can withstand high temperatures without breaking down; inexpensive materials like copper - very expensive ones like gold may also be used but these will make it even harder for electric currents to pass through the connection points due to their higher resistive qualities- which increases its durability and increases the lifespan of the resistor; Metal Film Resistors can be used with a greater range of voltage values than other types which means that they are more versatile.
Metal Oxide Film Resistor is a resistor with metal oxide film as its resistive component. It can be manufactured to produce values from 0.001Ω (100m) up to 100MΩ(109). Metal oxide films have the property of communicating well with semiconductor devices, so it may also serve as an interface between different components in electronic circuit boards and other applications for this purpose. In addition to the resistance of metal oxide film, other properties such as thermal stability and insulation may also be specified.
Thin Film Resistors (TTR) are resistive components made of thin films. They can be manufactured to produce values from 0.001Ω(100m) up to 100MΩ(109). Thin film technology offers the potential advantages of reduced size and weight with respect to traditional devices, lower cost compared in mass production by increasing surface area per unit volume, or lowering manufacturing costs for high-value component applications. Computer circuits containing TTRs may be more resistant to electromagnetic interference than those that use metal wire as a resistor. Lightweight, compact size, and low cost are the primary advantages of Thin Film Resistors. They can be used in electronic devices to provide accurate resistance values that help maintain stability over a wide range of operating conditions. Thin-film resistors are created by depositing metallic films on one or more substrates with thicknesses ranging from 0.005 microns (500nm) to several millimeters (mm). The insulating material is then deposited around each metal layer using vacuum deposition, sputtering or chemical vapor deposition.
Thick Film Resistors (TFR) is a type of resistor that has an internal wire made from metal. The common thickness for TFRs ranges between 100 microns and 1000 microns, which is thicker than the thin film resistors range. Thick Film resistors are generally used in power supplies since they have stable performance over high voltages, or when large currents need to be dissipated at low voltage values. These types of devices provide excellent heat dissipation because their size can handle even extreme temperatures without difficulty.
Carbon composition resistors are made from a mixture of carbon and metal. This type is not used very often, but it can be found in vintage circuits or equipment that requires high-voltage and low resistance for heat dissipation purposes. Carbon Composition Resistors are typically found in the audio frequency range, where they have much more stable performance than traditional types. The thickness of these devices ranges between 500 microns to 2000 microns (0.05 inches). They are generally not as efficient at conducting heat due to their larger size; however, this makes them better suited for use over higher voltages since there’s less risk of overheating when compared to other resistor types which dissipate large currents without difficulty.
Carbon film resistors are considered a cost-effective and reliable resistor type because they have low power losses, high tolerance to heat, good stability over time, and a long life span. Carbon Film Resistors make use of carbon granules from graphite electrodes that can produce up to 1000 volts per inch (VPI) between the electrode strips. They also offer excellent insulation properties due to their course structure which reduces resistance values significantly with increasing voltage. The CER rating is expressed in terms of megohms at 100 degrees centigrade(°C). Higher CER ratings indicate better performance for higher temperature ranges such as 150 °C.
On the basis of Application, the global film resistor market is segmented into Consumer Electronics, Telecommunications, Automotive/Energy Industrial/Medical & Others Applications.
Film Resistors are mainly used in consumer electronics and telecom equipment for their high performance, low cost, and reliability. Thin Film - Metal Film resistors find application as they can be easily integrated into circuitry boards that have tight space constraints or any other type of situation where small size is desired. This may also make them more affordable to include than some other types of resistor film such as Carbon Film which would require larger components with more dielectric material on the circuit board (increasing costs). Another benefit to thin-film metal films is they offer improved temperature stability over carbon due to metal's better ability at conducting heat away from its surface area when exposed to an external source.
In Telecommunications, film resistors are widely used for the purpose of protection. They can be found in microwave circuits and high-voltage power supplies. A typical use would involve protecting a cable from being damaged by an arc voltage or preventing switch arcing which may cause damage when turning on load equipment. Metal film resistors are most commonly used in the Telecommunications application.
In the Automotive and Energy industry, film resistors are used to regulate voltage in automotive applications. Thin Film Resistor is most commonly used in this application. Film Resistors are not extensively implemented in Industrial or Medical sectors but some usage has been seen for temperature regulation purposes (in electric blankets). Carbon Film Resistors may be more suitable than other types of films due to their higher resistance value at high temperatures. This can be useful when regulating heating elements on beds or sofas as they will maintain the desired temperature without getting too hot and burning anyone nearby. Metal Oxide Film - Thick Film would be another good choice for these industries due to its ability to handle high temperatures.
On the basis of Region, the global film resistors market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Middle East & Africa. In 2016, North America accounted for around 42% of the total share of the global film resistors market and this is expected to increase at a CAGR of around 0.53%, whereas the Asia Pacific followed with 38%. Latin American countries such as Argentina, Mexico, etc., also contributed to the increase in revenue generation for film resistors.
The growth factors for the global film resistors market are increasing investment in consumer electronics, growing demand for lightweight devices, and expansion of the automotive industry. Increasing the installation base is driving the need to use thinner wires, which require low-resistance components like TTRs or metal film resistors (MFR). Moreover, the high adoption rate of industrial automation across various industries such as oil & gas production, aerospace manufacturing, etc., has led to a rise in demand for wire resistance components. Finally, the rising trend towards using thin films on top of integrated circuits can lead to an increased usage of TFRs over MFRs due to their better electrical performance. In general, there is more than one factor that will affect future trends but these three seem to have the most potential influence on market size.
