A fan shroud is a covering that protects the blades of an electric or gas-powered fan. Usually, it covers the front and sides of the blade to reduce air resistance and noise from wind turbulence caused by moving air around them. Most often made out of metal, plastic, or fiberglass, they can also be found as component parts in fans used for other purposes such as on marine engines (eg., diesel) or industrial blowers. In a typical setup, grill baffles are installed on top of the shroud with ductwork passing through them into the furnace room where either cooled or heated air can be drawn off from its end depending on what type of heater is used.

Metal

The metal fan shrouds are made of copper, cast iron, and die-cast aluminum. They come in different shapes such as a cylinder or rectangular-shaped bodies with a circular blade cut out at one end for the air to pass through. While copper and aluminum fan blades have a low weight per unit area and provide excellent heat conduction in addition to being rustproof they tend to corrode easily when exposed to water vapor which limits their use in humid environments. Cast iron has good strength but it expands more than other metal alloys due to the high thermal expansion coefficient which leads to large stresses under load conditions. It also reacts readily with oxygen making it suitable for short-term usage only as corrosion becomes visible within few months of usage leading most manufacturers not to produce cast iron fan blades.

Plastic

A plastic fan shroud is a molded part that covers the motor and other internal components of an electric or gas-powered appliance, such as a refrigerator. It helps protect those parts from dirt, dust and other materials in the atmosphere. In some cases, it also provides shielding for people working on the unit who might otherwise be exposed to high voltages inside the device's metal housing.

The plastic fan shroud is typically made of a durable, high-impact material that can resist impacts and scratches. It also provides insulation against heat generated by the appliance's motor or other components. The thickness of the material, as well as its shape, determines how effective it will be at these tasks. Some models are designed to cover more than one component in an appliance while others only protect certain parts such as the condenser coils on air conditioners or compressors on refrigerators and freezers.

Industrial

Industrial cooling fans can be found in industries like paper mills and cement plants where they use electric motors that rotate the blades mounted on top of them around at high speed creating a flow of air over its surface up to 200 feet away from it. These types of fans also provide a more uniform temperature distribution among workers but have drawbacks too since their effectiveness depends very much on weather conditions like winds, humidity, and ambient temperature.

Automotive

Automotive cooling fans are installed in cars to cool off the engine by pumping air through it for better performance. They can either be mounted on a vehicle’s radiator or underneath its hood. In some cases, they may also need a shroud that encloses them as well so that dirt and insects don’t get into their workings leading to premature wear out of components like belts, hoses etcetera resulting in high maintenance costs while lowering fuel efficiency too because more energy is required for heating purposes than with other types of fan installations where only blades are exposed outside the car's body panels such as under-seat electric motors which use an enclosed loop system circulating cold water from the radiator around those motors eliminating the need for a shroud.

Construction
