The monopolar electrode consists of a single-pole connected to one terminal on an electrosurgical generator. The monopolar generator has an advantage in transferring high voltage and low amperage through the body to achieve hemostasis, but it also poses some challenges such as causing coagulation necrosis at the periphery of the electrode.



Bipolar Electrosurgical Generators:

Bipolar Electrosurgical Generators are the generators that can be connected with bipolar devices. They use alternating current (AC) to power electrosurgery tools and allow for easy switching between cutting mode and coagulation modes. The bipolar chamber of these instruments will heat up during operation due to electric resistance. The bipolar generator is one of the two major components in the electrosurgical unit. It converts mains voltage into a high-frequency alternating current (AC) and changes DC power to AC for cutting purposes. Bipolar generators are especially useful when monopolar devices such as diathermy loop, scissors, or forceps cannot be used; e.g. in the case of veins, ligaments, or areas where blood vessels are close to each other.
