An edge filter is usually applied before displaying content on screen or sending data into computer memory but after capture from media input such as cameras, scanners, video recorders/players, etc. The main function of an edge filter is removing unwanted frequencies present in signals so they do not appear distorted when processed for conversion to analog form (such as color TV).

Long Pass Wave:

A long-pass filter is a type of optical filter that transmits light with wavelengths longer than the cutoff point. It blocks or reflects all other wavelengths, including infrared and ultraviolet radiation, which are sometimes undesirable. A long-pass filter passes very little intensity in the short-wavelength range from about 400 nm to 700 nm (violet through deep red). It may also be called "deep blue" because it mostly lets blue light below 480nm wavelength go through while blocking higher frequencies such as yellow. This makes them useful for certain applications where high levels of IR would create artifacts in an image. Long Pass Edge Filters are widely used in camera lenses and machine vision systems to reduce unwanted reflections before they reach sensor devices or cameras optics.

 

Short Pass Wave:

Short Pass Edge Filters are used to remove IR and UV light, which are sometimes undesirable. A short-pass filter passes very little intensity in the long-wavelength range from about 700 nm (deep red) through 1500 nm (near-infrared). This makes them useful for certain applications where high levels of visible light would create artifacts in an image. Short pass filters with a cut-off wavelength below 480nm can be designed to block out wavelengths between 400nm and 480nm, making them suitable as camera "IR Blockers". These special IR blockers have been mathematically optimized so that they also keep colors rich by rejecting only some of the blue spectrum while still providing sharp images at depths up to 20 meters underwater.

The filters also aid with color rendition and contrast enhancement. In addition, they are often employed during video editing to reduce noise and improve picture quality while reducing bandwidth requirements.

 

Computer Vision:

In Computer Vision, filters are used to filter the images or videos. Edge filters help in removing noise and improving the edge detection process. It is a type of low-pass filter that helps in smoothing out motion blur during image capture by digital cameras. This provides better quality pictures when there is movement between shots or sequence of photos taken with the same camera at different exposures levels etc., as it enhances clarity for edges on moving objects or subjects within an image.
