The Global Display Device Market size is expected to grow from USD 118.5 billion in 2018 to USD 168.4 billion by 2028, at a CAGR of 5.6%. The LCD segment dominated the market during the forecast period with more than 50% share, and it is expected to continue its dominance throughout the forecast period owing to increasing demand for large screen devices such as televisions and monitors in residential as well as commercial applications. It is anticipated that the major drivers of the growth are the rising adoption of smartphones and tablets due to the increasing demand for high-quality displays in emerging markets such as China and India.
Display Devices are electronic devices that display text, images, and video in order to communicate a message. These devices can be classified into two types: monitors or televisions. The first major type of Display Device is the Monitor which displays information on both sides of its screen through an LCD (Liquid Crystal Display). The second major kind of display Devices is Television, which has one face displaying images or videos due to Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) being placed behind the screens. A third category includes OLEDs (Organic LED) and AMOLED TVs(Active Matrix Organic LEDs), but they have not been popularized so far because their prices are high when compared with other options like liquid crystal displays.
On the basis of Type, the market is segmented into LCD, LED, OLED and AMOLED.
LCD is a technology used in flat-panel TVs, computer monitors, and laptops to create an image by arranging liquid crystals between two panes of glass with each pane having electrically charged electrodes on the inside surface facing outwards towards one another.
This arrangement causes light passing through it from behind to be blocked or transmitted as desired while creating images that are viewable from the front side - either directly by eye or indirectly via a projection screen. This type is not compatible with high ambient lighting conditions because they produce difficulty reading text due to glare; however, this can be controlled using anti-glare filters placed over screens (most commonly applied when there's sunlight coming into contact with their surfaces.
This type of screen is based on the principle that electric current can be passed through a semiconductor material to create light, which then passes between two panes of glass with each pane having electrically charged electrodes on the inside surface facing outwards towards one another. This arrangement causes light passing through it from behind to be blocked or transmitted as desired while creating images that are viewable from the front side - either directly by eye or indirectly via a projection screen. LED screens have significant advantages over LCDs including better contrast and faster response times meaning they're less likely to produce afterimages when transitioning between frames because there's no need for an additional backlight (like in most LCD displays).
OLED is short for organic light-emitting diode. OLEDs are a type of display technology where a material that’s been given the name “organic,” or it may also be called “polymer,” emits light when electricity flows through it. They can use either AC signals to make them emit any color they want and DC to produce just one specific color (therefore making them more efficient). In addition, because there are no backlights in an OLED screen you get better contrast and faster response times (because there's less distance between pixels) than with LCD screens.
AMOLED stands for active-matrix organic light-emitting diode. They're a type of display technology where the pixels are physically arranged in such a way to allow them to illuminate without requiring backlights, like with LCDs and turning on individual lights (or red, green and blue bulbs) separately). AMOLES can not only produce any color they want using DC signals but also use AC signals that have been proven to make them more efficient than other OLED types. However, because there's no need for an additional backlight it sacrifices contrast levels over time.
On the basis of Application, the market is segmented into Residential, Large Enterprises, and Small Medium Enterprises. The Residential segment is expected to grow at the highest CAGR during 2021-2028. The reason for such high growth is that these monitors are being increasingly used in homes and offices due to their versatility as well as lower prices, which have allowed people to access them more easily than TVs.
On the basis of Region, the market is segmented Into North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Middle East & Africa. North America dominated the market with a whopping share of 36% in 2017 and it is anticipated that by 2028, North America will continue leading the global display device market with an estimated value of USD $19 billion. Furthermore, Latin American countries are also growing fast on account of rising disposable incomes coupled with strict macroeconomic policies followed by these nations' governments which has resulted in new investments in research & development (R&D) activities for manufacturing electronic devices including LCDs.
The Asia Pacific Market is anticipated to grow at the highest CAGR in terms of value during the forecast period. The regional dominance is driven by a growing need for large display devices such as TVs, PC monitors, and panoramic displays which are used increasingly for gaming and entertainment purposes. The market has been witnessing a rise in the adoption of various technologies due to their benefits such as high image quality with low power consumption. Henceforth the demand for these devices will likely increase over the forecast period owing to increased usage across different sectors – residential, large enterprises, and small-medium enterprises. On the other hand, declining prices have led consumers towards LCDs which are generally cheaper than other types of displays. However, this trend may not continue going forward because new innovations occurring by competitors could lead them to be costlier compared to earlier years.
